What's the difference between dating and courtship?

I've been watching shows on the Duggar family, 17 kids and counting and all of their documentary shows. Anyway, in the 3rd and 4th episode, Josh asked Ann if she'd marry him. Through both of those episodes, they talked about how the two were going to do a courtship. What's the difference between then two? I thought courting was when a couple gets to know each other, only there are other people around. Isn't that sort of like what dating is, only with this way the couple is alone at times?

I think dating is the stage to getting know each other. It includes meeting, having fun, talking about each other, knowing each other. Courtship is a step ahead in the relationship. Its the phase where the two seek each other to picture the other one as their better half, i.e. looking forward to getting married.

For me dating is the one of getting to know each other and courting is going in to the next level that is a little bit more intimate in nature. That is when the person will declare formally his feelings towards the girl. This is when his intentions are given and later his commitment when the girl would respond positively to the man.
