Wrong sizes!

When you're buying pants, do you have to try on every single pair? Even though they're all the same size, or should be? I do, because I've found to my sorrow, just because it says it's a certain size doesn't mean it is. I got tired of having to return jeans cause of a mismark inside the pants. I'm not talking on the wrong shelf, I'm talking the wrong size printed on the inside!!

I always try on all the clothes I buy. I watched how the manufacturers cut out clothing, and there are around a hundred layers of fabric that the die is to cut through. As it goes through the fabric, the fabric will shift and the sizes won't be exact. So, a pair of pants that are marked size 16 on the label might end up being a size 5 in actuality. It also depends on the manufacturer, the cut of the pattern, the type fabric, the people that sew the pieces together, the sorters of the pieces to be sewn together and so much more. It all depends on the quality, designer, retailer and even the cost. You might pay more for designer names, but they are more true to size and better quality. Even programs like "What Not to Wear" advise that you need to try on the clothing before you buy it. Because of the stuff I listed above, I usually buy my clothing at regular clothing stores. I stopped buying clothing at Wal Mart because of the quality of the fabric used in the clothing, the sewing of the clothing and the way it is sized. I bought 3 pairs of jeans (after trying on 9 pairs) and each pair ripped within 90 days of purchase. They didn't rip along the seams, it was through the solid fabric areas. It definitely was a case of rotten fabric. So now I go across the parking lot to Kohls and buy my jeans for less than they would cost at Wal Mart (I do have to wait for them to either go on sale or be put on the clearance racks) and get much better quality for my money.

I am fascinated with how things are made, and while my BF and I were back east I managed to score a tour through a garment company. I also scored a tour here in California. I learned an awful lot from going on the tour. I also saw the same thing on one of the learning channels on television. And I also worked for a week in a leather garment factory when I was in my teens. I quit that job in a heart beat when the pay check bounced and I was informed that I had to wait for a few days to cash it. Thank you so much for the best response. It was a wonderful finish to my fun evening. Thank you!

I never knew all that!! That makes it so much easier to understand now. I am very grateful for you for explaining all that. Just goes to show even us old dogs can learn something new. That's one reason I have so much fun here. I always learn something new. (Like how to cook a decent piece of meat!) How were you able to watch how the manufacturer cut them out? That would be fascinating to see. (Yeah, I know. Curiosity and the cat. But if I don't ask, I won't learn.)

I try on ever pair of pants I buy. I have to really, I'll jump from a size 6 to a size 9 depending on the brand or cut of the jean. I'm also only 5', so when I have to try a 9, I usually won't purchase them because they end up fitting in the hip or waist but I have about six inches dangling off the end of my foot. Most capri style pant fit my leg just right coming to the ankle where a normal pant leg would be.

i know the feeling about them being to long. i'm also short. i want buy them unless they are petite because that keeps u from getting all that extra length.

the petites help but some times they are still too long. i don'tloke to hem either. my kids laugh at me because capri pants make long pants on me. lol

Oh.. this happened with me a lot!! I am so done with it now .. that I don't buy even a single cheap cloth without trying it!! I hate it when my clothes are ill fitted!! And in pants say it jeans or pants or trousers and capris and many more catagories it is very very important to try it. No waist size is the same. I don't even buy my bra without trying it. lol

I always try a dress before buying it because I wanted to know if it really fits me and it looks good on me. Before when I will buy a Baby tee, I dont try them before buying them because I know my size to that certain store but when I tried it on, it doesn't fit me, so what I did is to give it away to my cousins. So I learned my lessons to try the dress or pants first before buying them so that I wont stressed out of going back to the store for replacement or giving it to my cousins.

Yes! The excitement is gone when trying out a clothe for the first time then it doesn't fit and already bought.

Exactly. Though I love jeans, I hate the trying out part. More so in summer. I've realised that unless you try them out, you will be in for a disappointment.

Isn't summer horrid for trying out clothes? Even with air conditioning in the store, you're still hot from outside. It's so uncomfortable!!

Dear friend, Before I buy a pant I do give a trial of that size and this size is opted in other jeans also. Since now I had not returned any clothes I brought. Moreover I make sure the size is correct from the trail room of that shop itself. The correct size is used in all clothes. If the change of brand comes I would try once again a trail dressing. As the size varies according to the brand.

I have to say this each manufactuar makes there clothes different. So what may be a size 10 to a walkmart brand might actually be a size 12 to levi or jardache.. I know that I have to try on every pair becuase currently funny but true I wear three different sizes. Laugh all you want but the makers of the jeans tick me off. Can't they get together and say hey this will be the standard size and go from there.. grrr. Sorry rant done.

Quite true, and everybody here says the same thing. It's not just you, the manufacturer's are doing it.

I think you really do need to try on the clothes because the sizes are different. I hate to do it though it is really a pain to try on clothes all the time and I really dont like doing it. I like to just buy off the rack but you need to be able to wear your clothes and have them fit appropriately.

Yes this is happen to me many times. I have taken wrong size of pants and shirts. Here in india there are many readymade shops they don't have trial room. If it is big enough and brand is there sure we can try. After several experiences I have changed my usual way of buying, now I am shopping without a trial. It will happen very rarely if I am not going to the shopping some one buying for me.

I usually do try on all the pants that I buy, even if they are the same size, the same style and the same brand. I have to admit, when I match on all three, usually they fit about the same. However, does that stop me from trying on each individual pair....absolutely not. I hate buying clothes, so even if there is the slightest chance that something might not fit right or might look a little different, I'm gonna find out before I plunk down the cash. Because if there's one thing I dislike more than buying clothes, it's having to go back to the store to return them.

Very true. Sometimes it's as simple as a zipper that won't work. I don't much want a pair of jeans where I can't pull the zipper up!! And I don't feel like paying the money, then spending days working on it with oil or soap.

Everytime we go out shopping, whatever we will buy in regards to clothes we have the habit of trying everything first before purchasing them. Well, what is the use of dressing rooms if we're not gonna use it? Also we would like to see first if it fits our looks, not just the size. Even if the size is right but it does not suit us, it would be such a waste if we will buy it. Anyway the sizes of each clothes still varies even if they are given a certain size.

Before, I used to have faith on the size printed on the pants. But now, my faith in them has waned when I bought a pair of jeans and could not breathe. LOL. So now, even if it means I have to stand in line in order to try a pair of pants, I do fit the pants before I buy them. ^-^

i really try on everything i buy even tops. what may look good in the hanger might not look good on you. with pants, it just indicates the waist size and it's length, what happens in between they can't put anymore. besides my body isn't like a model's body. and sometimes the pants might look good but the fit is not good for my body type. in our country it's not easy to return stuff. too many restrictions. so instead of wasting money, i make sure and try it first. cheers!

I just don't trust the sizes, so I have to try on every single pair, especially if the cutting is different. It's too much of a hassle to return goods, so I want to make sure I'm getting the right ones.

It doesnt mean that a same size pant will always be of a same size because every company will have a model template of each particular size. When they cut for tailoring in readymade company they will cut for their own template which will result in minor mistakes.

Always always buy a pant only after trying it on... because sometimes when you see a pant you like... it does not mean it will suit you.... sometimes some pants make your butt looks sooo big... it looks horrible and sometimes if you're short.. you should wear skinnier jeans as it makes you look taller... and sometimes the sizes in differnt stores are different... im a size 5 sometimes a 4...so depends on the store....

I too faced the similar problem. One time i purchased the pant, saw the size which is fitting to me. I chose the pant and after wearing only came to know it was different size. Changed. My lucky i did not buy that.
