I have heard of this term before. And I have had friends that has been diagnosed with it. But I still cannot understand what muscle spasm is. Is there any way to treat it? Does the treatment depend on where the muscle spasm is? Does muscle spasm only affect people of a certain age?

i have them.. its where your muscles like tense up and feel like they are twisting into knots.. you can even feel knots sometimes if you try to rub the area.. its very painful and it can happen to anyone and some times a medication will help.. some times a hot bath will relax the muscles.. some times massage etc..

Yeah, I know heat treatments are the best for dealing with the pain from the spasm. I wonder if there are anything we can do to avoid it. Some have advised exercising. But some muscles are not that easy to strengthened through exercise. And I really do not know if strengthening the affected muscle groups are going to help in reducing the occurrence or not.

Most of the time, this kind of illness happens to boxers.. It's very common among them when they reach certain ages, and i dunno the actual reason why.. All i know is that, they are unable to contol the movements of the muscles and thee's basically no cure for it.. The best it can be done is to keep it under control thru medication.. It's not something serious but it do affect our daily lives as it can happen anytime.. For those luckily ones, it will only affect their facial muscles.. But if one does not bother about their condition, it can become a stroke, very easily..

The spasm can be controlled by medication? What kind of medication are you referring to?

Muscle spasm is just like twitching of muscles, and medications are taken to lessen the twitching.. As for type of medicines, it's usually prescribed by those specialist.. Or should i say, muscle spams is something like Parkinson disease..

Because my cerebral palsy (a neurological condition I've had since birth), I have muscle spasms several times a day. It's basically involuntary twitching of muscle fibers that results in involuntary movement. Spasms are sometimes painful; sometimes not. Most of mine are not, thankfully. People with disabilities, people who exercise, or get injured can have spasms.

Thanks for sharing with me cripfemme. I am sorry to hear of your condition. Are there medications to control your condition? Or are you advised to do some exercises to avoid the spasms?

I think anytime you have a charlie horse or a cramp in your leg you have a muscle spasm. It is just the muscles cramping and going into a point where they cant be used on a regular basis. I think they are frequent and can happen to anybody at any age. They are painful and most people would not want to experience them.

Hmm... cramps in the legs, I can handle. What if the spasm is in other muscle groups? Like your stomach or your back? How do you deal with them then? Any idea how to avoid them? Will strengthening the muscles affected by muscle spasm help to alleviate the condition?
