God, I Hate Being Lied To...

This afternoon I was so ticked off I thought I was going to blow a blood vessel! As some of you know, several months ago I set up payments to pay back my student loan. The guy at the student loan talked to me and explained that if I made payments once a month for nine months that my loan would be paid off. They would wave penalties and back fees just to get it cleared up b/c it's an old student loan. So I agreed although we really didn't have the extra money to pay out...I figured I just grin and bare it and get it over with. Well, February was the last month so I decided to call them today to make sure that it was the last payment. Well, I talked to this woman who starts talking about how I might have to make another payment or two until they can find me a lender??? I'm like what lender, it's supposed to be paid off. She says Oh no, you'll owe $1700.00 after February's payment!! I'm like WHAT?? That's not what you guys told me 8 months ago!! She's all I don't know anything about that, you still have more payments and oh, by the way, I can lower your payments so it's easier for you to keep paying. I told her first off, I don't like being lied to...second, lower the payments is only going to prolong the bill and give them more opportunities to add fees and interest. So, I finally told her that the bill has waited this long, it can wait longer. I was pissed. I can't believe that I wasted 8 months worth of payments and for nothing. Had they been upfront at the beginning I wouldn't have bothered b/c I know there's no way we can afford years of payments...I guess they knew that too that's why they lied about it. Have you ever had a company lie to you about a bill to get you to pay? Does it tick you off when you catch them in it? Have you ever called them on it when you found out? Oh, and b/c I let them take the payments out of our secondary bank account I now have to close that and open a new one so they can't overdraft it trying to take a payment. You should let this be a lesson to you that whenever you make an agreement like that, you have to insist the person sends you a letter to confirm it. Otherwise, they could not write it in their system and then you have no proof :( Another lesson you can get from this is to call and check your balance each month (that is if you can't look online) just to constantly make sure everything is going as planned. I'm sorry this happened to you! Perhaps the first guy was telling the truth, but he didn't write it down or didn't file it correctly. These places are usually not very organized. I also would never do autopayments b/c I don't trust those type of places. It is best to send a check once a month so that you have a record of the payment and they can't take out anything automatically.

Good for you for stopping paying, b/c I'm sure a lot of people would just suck it up and keep sending money! I've heard that collection agencies will do anything to get their money, and they don't even care what you owe because it's their job to get as much as they can. Usually if you can work the deal out with the company who actually gave you the loan, usually that deal is more trustworthy. However I have heard that once your loan gets pushed to a collection agency, you are basically stuck. Hopefully they leave you alone from now on.

Girl, I told you once and I will tell you again! If they have not got the money from you by now and they have not taken it to court by now, they never will! It would cost them more in Lawyer's and court cost to get you to pay it then what they will get and because of your income they are looking at getting nothing! Just spending money to get nothing is not how a company survives. They will try to scare you, talk you into it and all kinds of tricks to get you to pay! Put on your answering machine and change your bank account. They will get tired of you soon. With the way the world is going and the economy is going that company is going to try to hit up every one to stay afloat. So, just don't answer them they will go away! A lot of companies are pulling that now on people because money is so tight and they want their jobs. ** Peace and Love get's you through everything in Life **

I talked to the bank and I have print-outs of the 8 payments that I made but that's it. The account will have to be closed otherwise they can overdraft it trying to take another payment. ~~AT PEACE WITHIN~~ **STAND STRONG AND TRUST IN GOD**

Either the guy lied to you, or he pocketed the money himself. Another thing is that he could have done it on his own without authorization. What you should have done was to get it in writing. If you already have, you have to show the loan officer the information plus the record of the payments. That should straighten off, and give her a description and the name of the man you were talking to.

It's the problem of dealing with two seperate companies. The student loan was through Dept. of Education but a collection agency is handling the bill. The first one won't talk to me they just forward my calls to the second one...and both of them have been lying through their teeth. ~~AT PEACE WITHIN~~ **STAND STRONG AND TRUST IN GOD**

That's terrible! I hate being lied to as well --- it's one of my biggest pet peeves. Look at it from their point of view - they don't care if you don't have the money, they found a way to make you pay for 8 months and now they'll find another way to make you pay the other 1700 dollars. They're not going to do it honestly, oh nooooo! They're going to lie to you again and again until it's paid. They have entire departments dedicated to collecting money and they would say and do whatever it takes. My mother had a creditor call and ask her to have her neighbor call and pay his bill. My mom didn't even know this neighbor and didn't want these guys to keep calling her - they would actually yell at HER, and tell her to just get over to her neighbors apartment and tell him to pay the bill or they're going to keep calling her. She called me in tears. I called the collection company back and they said it's standard procedure to call neighbors, relatives, people with similar last names, colleagues, etc -- and exert pressure that way. They're heartless

Well, I hope they enjoyed the payments b/c they won't ever get another. I've had the student loan ppl calling my family before and they just hang up on them. From now on my answering machine will be talking to them. It just ticks me off that they lied to me. ~~AT PEACE WITHIN~~ **STAND STRONG AND TRUST IN GOD**

Too bad it's too much of a bother to get a new phone number or I'd tell you to cancel your number and get an unlisted one. Now that we're getting all our daughter's creditor calls because hubby cosigned her loan - I have extreme sympathy for you and anyone who has to deal with the creditor phone people.

Yes, I have had places like this lie to me before. I always get the operator's name and extension and the date and time of the call. But alot of times this does not matter at all. They all lie in order to get the most amount of money from you. It really does suck. The only thing I can say is to always get any kind of agreement in writing. Have a great day and happy myLotting!!!

I would have had a fit also.. Everytime you call anyone, you get someone different so now when we get any kind of information, we get a name to go with it.. They will not give you their last mane but you can get a first name and write it down with the day, date and time.. I understand how you feel because last summer we had a situation where we were getting extorted, that is all that I can call it, because that is what it sound like.. We live in the county and can burn brush in our yard as long as we have a burn permit and stay within the rules, so we did.. We have a new neighbor who apparently doesn't understand the rules of living in the county and when we burned, they called the rural fire department on us.. The fire department came and we showed them the burn permit, the waterhose pulled up to the fire, the contained fire, the shovel and all of the other equipment that they recommend that you have on hand.. He was here no more than 4 minutes and told us that "It looks like you have everything under control".. We thought that was the end of it until we got a $2,400 bill from them, all for 4 minutes and someones nosy stupidity.. We were also told that if we subscribed to their plan, we wouldn't have to pay but $400.00.. In the first place, I had never lived it the county before and this was a lousy way to try and sell me their services, I thought, since I had always lived in the city, that if you had a fire, the fire department came and put it out, that is what your taxes were for, but not in the county.. It all boiled down to me telling them they could go straight to h*ll and take the bill with them, they were not going to use the mafia tactics on me and if my house ever caught on fire, I had better not see them even come close to pulling in my driveway and to turn this stupid bill over to a lawyer.. I was told that it was the law that if my house caught on fire, they had to come and put it out and without their services, that would cost me $6,000, so I repeated myself and told her they had better never be seen on my property again.. I haven't heard from than again, but now, since I ran my mouth, I have to figure how to get this stupid insurance without swallowing all of my pride.. Maybe the lady I went off on has quit and will not be there whenever I have to buy the insurance.. Oh well, some companies will screw over you in any way they can.. But then again, I would fight it every step of the way..

Oh, my daughter could identify with you on this one! She was called by a 'lawyer', telling her that she owed such and such and she needed to pay. And if she paid so much by this spring, he could get the rest of the bill knocked off. Well, she thought, well, I guess I can do that. She had paid about $2,500. She went to buy a car for her daughter and her EX-husband, who is a car dealer, looked up her credit. HE knew she was paying back the money. He questioned her about who/when, etc., and said, THEY have lied to you. That money was cleared off your credit over a year ago! SHE was SO mad! He told her, if she had not signed anything saying she'd pay it back to them, then they had no leg to stand on. The only thing she needed to do was stop paying and don't talk to them and the couldn't do anything to her since she didn't owe it at all. She stopped paying!! Did you just talk to these people on the phone? Or did you sign something? It sounds like you were done exactly like my daughter.

That sounds like bait and switch to me. And of course, the jerks probably never sent anything in writing! I sure wish you had some recourse, twoey.

I used to work for a phone company, I can't say which one, but it was as if it were my JOB to lie and make excuses. I hated it! Obviously I don't work there anymore! One thing this company would do that really ticked me off was they would send out pre paid visa cards as a gift for buying a new service...say DSL or television service...if you're lucky to even get the gifts they promised you, they were impossibly difficult to understand. And even though you can pay your bill with Visa, guess what? You couldn't pay it using the prepaid visa they just sent you. That never made any sense to me. They also had shady sales tactics. I talked to numerous people while at that job that didn't even own a computer yet someone had talked them into DSL service. Then they call wondering why their bill jumped $40. GRRR!! I guess all I can say is that's America for ya. Always taking advantage of those that are weaker and those we can swindle out of a dollar. Oh, and one more thing. Do you think the company ever refundd these people? Heck no! I was trained to give them this crap about how credits to your account may take up to 3 billing cycles. It drove me crazy and I always left that place feeling like I needed a long hot shower.

Things like this make me so angry and the people who are messing you about probably have loads of money and no idea what it's like to struggle to make ends meet. I hope you can resolve this, I would write a strong letter to the company explaining what has happened and see if there is anything they can do. Take care.

Some companies have the nerve to push you into paying something and promising you it will be all ok at the end. I hate it that you can't find the exact rep that you spoke to originally. I hate it when the next one tells you complete BS just to get you to keep paying - fricken frustrating. Well tell them to shove it and have the payment cancelled or stopped.

I understand your anger, but I have never had it happen to me. Most of my woes these days in insurance. My husband and I are trying to get new affordable insurance. He called the 800 number to ask questions and the man kept saying that you just pay the copay. He would not answer the questions. I am tired of these people.

Hi twoey, I wonder if this is a newsworthy item, i.e. something a TV news station could get into. I find that over here at least, it sometimes helps to get financial disputes like yours aired. It leads to a favorable resolution, in your favor. Otherwise, there might be a legal recourse to your situation.

Yes, I've had companies lie to me which taught me a huge lesson which is to get the persons name and phone number of the person I last talked to so that in the event something like this were to happen, I'd have some tangible evidence to fight back with. If that didn't work then I'd get the managers name and so on up the ladder till I get the correct response back and all is rectified. One company that lied to me did so twice and that was the last time I delt with them. I've since changed companies and never looked back. However, being a school loan, you can't change companies but you can go up the ladder of managers till you get the right answer or at least try to. Good luck!

That is absolutely ridiculous. Did you get paperwork with the first one? Did it say this is how it was set up and would go? Anything in writing? If so I would say, hey, I have this and you can suck eggs! I hate when corporations can tell you anything they want and then say Oops! Not right! Good luck with it all!
