Clearing your throat? Isn't a bad habit?

Metro Manila had experienced cold weather a few months ago. A number of people incurred a few absences and presenting medical cerificates were requested by their bosses. I must admit that a lot of people are getting sick and it includes me as well.
Whenever you have colds or cough, Do you always clear your throat?
Is it a good habit or not? It's just that some people may get irritated...

This reminds me of a funny story when I was in an office with a Vice President and a boss just under her. I had a bit of a cold and a lot of times to avoid coughing, I would just clear my throat (I still do that).
The two of them got into a bit of a disagreement and when I cleared my throat, they thought I was reprimanding them, or at least saying...Don't argue in front of me. It was really funny because I was just a kid then, and looking back on that now I think they respected me for something I didn't even mean to do. LOL
