I came across this on another site and it sure is enlightening if you dont already know or if its been awhile...things do change. This is an article about the expriation of food...canned,bagged and fresh... and when to rotate stock and when to use by the "Sell by date" etc. THought I'd pass it along! http://www.gourmetsleuth.com/food_expiration_dates_faqs.asp

Interesting timing. My sister emailed last night asking my opinion about using an out-of-date chip dip that she had. The date was November, but it smelled fine. I advised that "The nose knows" and told her I'd go for it. Haven't heard from her since . . . guess I'd better check to see if she survived it!

And I have heard the "sell by" date is mainly used for the stores to keep "fresh" stuff on their shelves.. that doesn't mean the item is "bad" after that date. Could have several more weeks/months on it. Andyeah, athe nose knows quite often. Only things I am leary of is dairy products...the nose can tell, but still - I ate some tarter sauce once when we did crab legs at home. I got food poisoning and my husband didn't - he ate the same crab, but he didn't use the tarter sauce, he used cocktail sauce. So I just choose to be more cautious on the dairy things.

Looks like everyone so far has said they use their nose to see if it is good or not, everyone except me although I do smell the food too, just didn't think to say that when I was posting my response. Alrighty then, talk to you later my friend, Have a good mylotting day, Chris

Thanks for the link. I knew some of that already, but of course not all of it. Helpful information to have at hand.

Yeah, me too and common sense tells you alot of it, but sometimes things change so it is just best to have it if you need it rather than need it and not have it! I printedit out and put in in my pantry

Hey, thanks for sharing this site with the rest of us. I read it all and I learned some new things I didn't know. Like hard cheese is good for 3-6 months after expiration date. Then why not put the true expiration date on it? Because this way the manufactures sell more and make more money. I usually can use my milk for a day or two after expiration date. But sometimes it is no good even before the date and that makes me angry. Or nothing like coming home with a big four litre jug and open it and it is already bad. I have at times taken it back but most times I just end up pouring it down the sink. Alrighty then, talk to you later my friend, Have a good mylotting day, Chris

Thank You for that info. I tend to sometimes use items past the expiration date but if something is too far out of date I dont take a chance. You especially dont want to do that with mayonaise or things that could possibly cause salmonella. This could be potentially dangerous. Thanks again for the information.

I am more careful of dairy products. Even tho they smell okay, they can still be bad as I mentioned in the post above.
