The man is black, do you think Obama had any influence on why he was elected?
Michael Steele is his name I sure hope he can pull the party together, I believe in the two party system. It makes me very uneasy when one party has so much power.

I wouldn't doubt that Obama's presidential run and election had something to do with it. This is politics of course. There was an article in "Jet" about him a few months ago referring to him as the "Republican Obama" and I have no doubt that played a part in his success.
He didn't come out of nowhere though. He's been seen as a rising star in the Republican party for a long time and I know he's appeared on Hannity and Colmes numerous times in the past. He has a fair amount of political experience behind him as former Lt. Governor in Maryland, a heavily Democrat state.
Sadly, being a black republican has opened him up to many racial attacks that are only acceptable when directed at republicans. When running for Lt. Governor the Baltimore Sun said the only thing he brought to the table was the "color of his skin". He's also been called an "Uncle Tom" by democrats repeatedly as the favorite racial slur of the left.
I'm glad he's been elected and I think he has a lot of potential. I also think it's important that people see that the republican party does not exclude minorities. I think it's sad that some people are taught that without being taught the actual goals of the republican party which have never had discrimination on the agenda.
On a side not I'm thrilled he beat Katon Dawson, who I feel would have done nothing for the party. Katon Dawson is the man who said he would be "Obama's worst nightmare". That kind of talk doesn't help this country. "Loyal opposition" as McCain said, is what is important.

Hello Savypat,
As Taskr pointed out, Michael Steele has been a prominent face among the GOP for many years. People may remember that he was the Lt. Governor of Maryland, and ran for Governor. Others will remember the "Oreo Cookie" incident. Others still will remember his leadership of the GOPAC. He is a solid Conservative with a background in the Seminary as well as law. I'm so fond of him because of his balanced approach to the 'art of politicking'. He strikes me as very real, driven by common sense, and a man who is truly committed to color-blindness. The latter places a chasm the size of the Grand Canynon between him and Obama, who seems to live and breath race. I welcome prominent color-blind leadership of any political party, as we will never overcome racism until every skin color embraces color-blindness. Hopefully Michael Steele will have a real impact in that regard!
Mr. Steele is a highly accomplished man. I have the highest expectations that he will be the glue that will reunite the GOP. In fact, I very much look forward to his outreach to the state parties.
Like yourself, I am a great fan of the division of power, i.e. checks and balances. We should all remember the wise words of Lord John Emerich Edward Dalberg Acton: "Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely."
