Locking valuables in the trunk of your car

We have an ecological center in my town and there is a beautiful walking path through it. Many people take their cars there and park them and then spend hours walking. Recently, there has been a wave of break-ins in the parking lot. Just last week, a woman returned to her car after her walk to find one of the windows smashed. The thief had broken the window to access the release for the trunk. He took her purse and, in the time she was walking, was able to make two purchases on one of her credit cards. Local authorities are telling people to carry their driver's license, money, credit cards, etc., on their person in a money belt, a fanny pack, a backpack... anything that is comfortable to carry so that they stop locking valuables in the trunks of their cars. When you visit a public place (like the beach, a park, a festival, etc.), do you lock your handbag or wallet in the trunk of your car so you don't have to carry it around with you? Do you do so because it seems safer there?
