define desperation

the best way to define the word desperation for me is through the lyrics of their sog, Rescue..
here it goes:

It is when...
you start resorting to stuffs you never thought of before...
you do things that you know would damage you more than it would benefit you.
you swallow your pride and take on whatever it is to meet your goal.
Well that's how it is in my own words...
Most of the time,
desperation is better than ultimate passiveness...
It's better to do something without certainty than to do nothing at all...
