The man, named as IT consultant Arthur Phillip Freeman, was arrested following an incident at 0910AEST (2210 UTC) where Darcey Iris Freeman, 4, fell 60m into a river. She was rescued from the water but had suffered severe injuries and died later in the city's Royal Children's Hospital. Two other children were in the car at the time of the incident. They are believed also to be the children of Arthur Freeman. Freeman and his wife, Peta, split in 2007. Shortly after the incident, Freeman was spotted in the Commonwealth Law Courts in William Street with the two other children. He appeared to be in a distressed or confused state. He was arrested immediately and his case brought to Melbourne Magistrates' Court this afternoon. The police say that Freeman is in an acute psychiatric state and cannot be questioned. ----- There is some indication that the father and mother are in a custody dispute at the moment. I cannot, however, understand why people do things like this. How can it possibly seem like a better idea to throw your daughter over a bridge than to lose her to your wife? I can't really imagine what it must have been like for the other cars on the road to witness this unfold. Shocked drivers who witnessed the incident – which police say occurred in a matter of seconds – immediately called emergency hotlines as Mr Freeman reportedly got back in the large white family Land Cruiser, and drove away. I remember a story once about a man who stole a car from a gas station. The car had a kid in the passenger seat, so the man opened the door and tried to push the kid out. The kid got tangled in the seatbelt and was dragged beside the car for several miles before other citizens forced the man over and tore him from the car. As I recall, they beat the thief when they got their hands on him. The peoplel in the Melborne story, however, apparently only got on their cell phones to call emergency hotlines. Me, I think I would have rammed the Land Cruiser with my car! #@#$%#@!

How terrible. Just cannot believe these things go on. Children are a precious gift. I would have been horrified to see this. Maybe we should be tested before we become parents. And maybe periodially afterwards. This may not be a popuar idea. But perhaps we would catch people before they commit these sickening acts, and save innocent kids.

It's always sad when you hear about a parent doing something like this. Human life seems to have very little value for some. I hope they keep him away from any other kids b/c it seems he's really unstable. ~~AT PEACE WITHIN~~ **STAND STRONG AND TRUST IN GOD**

I do wonder if he is not all in his senses, how three children were in his care? Nobody has noticed that he was not suitable to take care of his children any longer? No social service staff? No teachers? No relatives that might have realised that he is agitated and might commit something stupid?

I think I would have been chasing that guy down and dragging him out of his car. He could use a big butt kicking.
