What do your kids have to do to earn an allowance?

I grew up in the 60's and 70's and had certain chores I had to do in order to get an allowance, feed the dog, clean up the dog's poop, take out the trash, raking leaves, etc. Do parents toady still make kids do these things or do kids get allowances because they were born?

I was required to do those things growing up to get my allowance as well as keep my grades good and maintain good behavior. I will do a similar system when my children get old enough to get an allowance. My oldest is 2 so they are not getting one yet. I will do as my grandmotheer did and each week we started with a set amount of money and everytime we did not do a chore or we misbehaved badly enough we would lose some of it. At the end of the week we were paid what was left. I like that system as they can easily see the consequenses and they can always have the goal of getting all of their money.

My kids do those things without an allowance. We all work together to keep up with the house and pets. I will give them money for a snack but its not pay for doing housework. I believe children should learn how to do chores in order to run a successful home once there out on there own.
