what is your earliest memory of childhood?

I am intrigued to know just how far back that you can actually remember - whether it is a vague memory or quite vivid? I remember at about 18 months I stepped on the back of our old english sheepdog to reach something from the dreser and the dog jumped up and bit me. I am wondering if i remember it because it upset me and it was quite traumatic. Of course i understand why the dog did it and my parents did too fortunately. Sometimes i wonder if you think you remember things or formulate them in your mind because other people - older relatives- have talked about it happening and it somehow becomes a false memory perhaps? Close your eyes and think really carefully about this and let me know what your thoughts are?

HI. Wow this is a good one. I can remember I was about 5 years old and my dad brought home this huge and I mean huge Bull dog. I was so scared I jumped behind the couch, and was so scared of it. My dad had to take the dog back. It really makes you think when you get older, of the things you could only remember when you are young.

It is funny how your first memory is usually a bad one, I guess that is just how it works. I can remember when I was about two years old my parents were fighting in the dining room, and I was yelling for my favorite cereal at that time (Cinnamon Toast Crunch) in my height chair. There was a word from their fight that stuck in my mind until I actually learned what it really meant when I was in elementary school hearing other kids talking about it, that word was "divorce", I can remember the moment the definition of the word struck me, and that is when the memory came back to my mind, for those few years that memory was covered up. Low and behold my parents were divorced not long after that fight happened. I have asked my parents if that is what happened, and they were surprised to know how much I remembered. It is amazing how the mind works.
