If you saw someone drowning would you try to save them?

So this question is pretty straight forward, if you seen someone drowning in and there was no life guards would you try to save them. I absolutely would, I have recently learned that legally you have no obligation to do anything even if you are with the person and standing beside them, you do not have to help them at all. I think this is absolutely crazy, i could never stand by and watch someone drown i dont care if i knew them or not! What about all you would you help? Do you think that the laws should change and we if we can swim should be responsible for trying to help?
