A million dollars... - Can only buy you a few loaves of bread in Zimbabwe!

In Zimbabwe, with the crazy runaway inflation, a million dollars like this (pictured) can only buy you 5 loaves of bread. With denominations like 5 million, 1 million, 500 thousand... anyone can be a millionaire here. While people are starving there, other parts of the world are hosting eating competitions! The unfair distribution of food around the world is such, ain't it? Imagine, a million dollars for a few loaves of bread. Yet we think nothing of bread when we eat it in the morning when we get up from bed. The value of things is so vastly different across the world!

i totally agree with you that this is ridiculous. every time i read something like this in the news, i'd feel so sad for the people there. this feeling is exacerbated when i see people eating a mouth or two of their meal and leave the rest to be thrown away. the only upside i see from such news is that it makes me appreciate my life more. i always feel very blessed to be born where i am whenever such news crosses my path. i still remember the photo taken by a pulitzer winner, about the vulture waiting just behind a child dying of starvation. that picture brings tears to my eyes every time i see it.

Yeah, I know about the picture. The guy was also chastised for not helping the child in the picture! And story has it that the photographer who took the picture felt so depressed for not helping the kid afterward, he killed himself. I do not know if it is true or not. Like I said, the distribution of food across the world is not fair!

That was the other story that was floating around the net. I guess winning recognition for what you have done is not everything to some people. It is sad that he killed himself due to depression. It would have been more helpful if he was still alive. He could have taken pictures and compile them into books and sold them for money which he could then use to help out with the poverty over there.

the story i heard was slightly different. not too sure if he took any action after taking the picture. only thing i knew was photo-journalist simply can't help everyone. such scenes are probably all over where he was. though i heard he killed himself because he was so depressed by the poverty over there. :(

yeah yeah.. I have known about this news since last year, on channel news asia.. lol =D It's just too crazy and most ple turned into millionaire overnight while some became a bankrupt overnight.. PLus, the interview i saw on tv, the man was still carrying his whole stack of money, just withdrawn from the bank.. lol =D I guess it's due to their government and political unrest, resulting in the inflation.. As for the actual situation now, i hope it has more or less become normal, if not, the ple there are bound to suffer..

It is hard to believe as such kind of banknote seems to value a lot but it isn't in the reality. The life is not easy there. I love China

Yeah... so many zeros behind the number. But the paper it is printed on is worth more than the value of the note. Sad, isn't it?

That pity is children, they must calculate the amount so big, if wanting to spend their money. What the mathematical lesson in school been taught to count as big as that?

hmm... you raised a very valid point there too! with that kind of denominations, it is a wonder they can keep track of their money at all!
