Reading Slump

Hello fellow mylot readers. Do you ever go through a reading slump, where every book you pick up just doesn't do it for you? I was going through one of these just after christmas. My hubby got me a new Stephen King for Christmas...His short stories and I couldn't get into it. I finally found some books at the library one by margaret Weis, and of course the memory keepers daughter that seemed to help me break out of my slump. How about you? Ever experience this? And what helped you get out of it?

Hi there, I can certainly relate, I seem to be in one of those right at the moment, actually my reading and writing have both suffered since I have discovered Mylot. I spend so much time on here that I'm not doing any of my formal writing nor am I reading anything that I have on my reading list. Interestingly, you mention that The Memory Keepers Daughter helped get you out of one of your reading slumps. I tried to read that book awhile back and I couldn't get through it. I don't think there was anything wrong with the book, it was just my particular mood at that time, in fact I have the intention of trying to read it again at another time. I'm also looking for books to add to my reading list and so if anyone has anything that they are absolutely in love with be sure to pass them on to me. And until next timeā€¦ happy Mylotting!

Well Wheel, Let me tell you I felt the same way about the book. I had to push myself to get through it. It was not an easy task. Then finally it started getting better. I really enjoyed it once I got into it and actually didn't want to put it down. Almost like someone else had started the book....

hi mag! well, honestly, i have not been reading much lately. i had been pretty absorbed with work that i don't get to read much. i stay at home and work freelance and most of the time, i am in front of the computer. but i know i really need to read from time to time, to just grab a nice book and be absorbed in it. well, i would like a nice comfortable position doing it, so now isn't the time to do it because i am pregnant and having difficulty finding the right position for me. hehe take care and God bless you! happy mylotting! :D

i also find books that i cannot get into. i wanted to read a book on the life of F Scott Fitzgeralds wife, Zelda, but i found the writer was hard to follow. i have so many books waiting to be read and i visit the library almost every week, so i am never at a loss for books, if i dislike one, i jump into another!

I tend to read in fits. Right now I have a lot of extra time because I am going through a divorce. So for awhile I watch a lot of TV and then I will read several books. Just depends on my mood.

Yep, I know EXACTLY what you're going through! I recently started a discussion where I asked people to suggest a book for me - one that they couldn't put down - because I was (well, I still am) going through this problem. I crave a book I can't put down, but I've been having a heck of a time finding one! Some of the suggestions made look really good, so I'm going to hit the library and see if I can get them. :-) Good luck to you!

I do know what you mean, I go through those slumps on occasion myself. For 30 years all I wanted to do was read historical romances. I loved them, as I grew older I noticed I couldn't get into them anymore. Seemed to be the same ole same old. Always knew how it would end. One day while working at nursing facility I was in their small library at break and was going through the books when I saw a book called 'Guilt by association' by Susan Sloan, even the title was way off the beaten tract for me. I don't know how many times over the weeks I picked that book up and read the jacket only to put it back on the shelf. Finally one day I picked it up, read the first few pages and was hooked. It is not a romance. It's about a woman who in the 60s was raped by an acquaintance and carried the stigma attached to it, even her mother said it was her fault, because back then you were guilty by association. This woman went 20 or 30 years before she came back across the man that raped her and boy did she get even. He didn't even remember her, she went to work for him. It was a great book. A lot of times you can tell where the story is going, but not with this one, all of a sudden I was reading and asking myself what had I missed, I couldn't even go to the back of the book and figure it out. So I carefully made sure I read every word, could have knocked me over with a feather. This author is a genius. She use to be a criminal lawyer and she puts a little of that in her books. But not to much, I don't like stories loaded with politics and stuff. I don't know what she's doing now, she only has four books out so far, I've read three of them, haven't been able to get my hands on the fourth. Karin Slaughter is good too, she writes in series. She has so many people mad at her now. I belong to a discussion site and people are angry with the way she ended the sixth book, I think it's the sixth, anyway the last one is coming out in July I think. I think what was causing my slump back then was my tastes were changing and I didn't realize it. I like John Saul, his books are quick and spooky. Have you tried reading something you normally wouldn't read?

True.Sometimes this does happen and in that case I pick up an old favourite of mine[which I ahve not read for some time] and read it all over again. It is not that we would remember all the books that we have read verbatim and[ even otherwise I keep on re reading some favourites of mine for relaxation],so this does the trick.
