Do you pick up pennies?

I was just wondering if I am the only one who cannot walk by a penny laying on the sidewalk without picking it up. I have seen people walk past not only pennies, but also dimes and nickles. What about you myLotters? Are you the type of person who would just toss a penny aside, or are you the type that if you see it laying even in the middle of the street you will pause while walking across to pick it up?

I am a penny picker.. any money i see i try to pick it up. I would save all the money i pick and turn around donate it back to charity during x-mas that way i know that it is going to a good cause.

We pick up money no matter how small. Any change is saved to use for the holidays. But we also pick up cans which we can get .10 cents each for. Those we save and turn in when we need it for the mandatory lay off in July and December. We ate last summer because of mostly found cans to the tune of $176 The kids help and are part of it but then they benefit from it too and know it.

I used to walk around and pick up cans when I was a kid. I didn't have a way to take them to the recycling center, so my brother would buy them off of me. I'm not sure, but he was probably profiting. Otherwise, he probably would have just let me go along and cash mine in separate. He is still a trade and bartering. And he usually comes out ahead. LOL It's great that you are teaching your kids this financial responsibility at such a young age. I think that is great!

Thanks Patgalca, you are not only picking up a nickel or a dime there with that bottle, but like you say you are helping to clean up the environment. It's kind of like killing two birds with one stone, as the old saying goes. Thanks for joining in on this discussion. I hope you have a great day!

Yes I do pick up pennies and I strongly believe in a penny saved is a penny earned. I have a penny bank exclusively for pennys I pick up. Might sound crazy but we have cashed in those pennies before. You can not get to the end if you never started at the beinning and all wealth starts at 1 cent.

Hey, I like your consensus on this matter. Isn't it great how so many people here on myLot realize the value of a penny. I am glad to see that! I myself, have struggled many different times in my life, but the money always seems to be there some way some how. I think it is because of the way that I do try to take time to save a penny here or make a buck there. Thanks for your response and insight. It is great to hear from everyone here at myLot. Have a beautiful day!

Find a penny and pick it up and all day long you'll have good luck! Yes i do. Any money I find I pick up. After all these days, every penny counts. My kids do this as well. I always look at the date on money too to see how old it is.

That's the expression I was trying to think of. My brother says that all of the time. If his kids are with us, he will point out the money if they don't spot it and then he'll say that as they are picking it up. He has such a great sense of humor, the way he says it just makes every one in a good mood for the day whether they are the one who found the money or not. Thanks for sharing that with us. I hope you'll have a great day!

If I see money, I pick it up. Although, my daughter seems to find it before anyone else. It's like she has automatic radar on the stuff.

Good for her, your daughter is starting out the money collection early I see. That's a good thing. I remember once when I was a kid getting left behind at the store because I stopped on the way out to check all of the machines to see if there was any change in the return slot. I guess I have been frugal all of my life. LOL Probably has something to do with being born the last day of the year, and being a tax baby. I always pick up pennies that are on the ground. I pick up any kind of change i see on the ground because I save it and then let it all add up to put into my savings account. You never know how much you have in change until you let it all add up and save it for a rainy day.

I used to never spend my change. I would always put it in this jar and save it until it was either full, or too heavy for me to carry anymore. Then I would take it to the bank. I would have to go two towns over, because our local branches didn't have a change machine (which I worked there so it wasn't far out of the way). But once I made it to the bank, I usually had about $125 worth of change in that jar every time. About the same time of year, I would usually take in my aluminum cans and get about $45 for them. Although, the last time the aluminum was really up, and I got something like $72 for those. That's a lot of money for trash. LOL Thanks for your response in this discussion, and have a great day!

No... I never did that... My mom does that all the time, but I hate it. Most of the times I don't notice them, but even when I do I don't like to pick them up, no matter what amount it is, I don't feel ok... There are many reaasons I don't know exactly why, but maybe I'm a bit too paranoic... I think that maybe the person who lost it is nearby, why take it then? Or maybe it's one of those stupid jokes where they tie the penny to a nearly invisible string... I told you I may be paranoic... But mostly it's because I don't care. It's just a penny, or even if there would be a bigger amount, still I don't feel right picking them up. Maybe a homeless person would pass by there and would surely need it more than I do. I know it is said that when you find money on the streets or something precious (a necklace or bracelet etc.) it's considered that it brings you luck and you should take it, but I don't believe in those things.

lol I don't care how embarrassing a thing would be, when I care for something I do it anyway, and I don't care about others :) But I don't think I would need money found on the streets that much... that's why I don't pick them up. Hmm just wondering, why do you do it?

It's funny how we all have our own reasoning about things in life even something as little as picking up a penny. I wonder why you worry about such things, I guess if you might risk being embarrassed then you don't want to take a chance. That's understandable, I know people who don't even like to go out in public. We all have our own issues. :) Thanks for your response in this discussion, and have a great day!

I usually pick up all sorts of change that I see on the ground. I've passed up pennies though lately because it's been so cold I hate taking the time to stop to collect them. If I see them inside a building or something I'll pick them up, but otherwise, until it warms up I may start skipping them more! I'm kicking myself though, I skipped three pennies yesterday on my walk back from class. I could have had three maybe more and I just decided that maybe I should skip them for now.

I know sometimes in the cold weather they can get stuck to the ground, and with gloves on sometimes it is impossible to free them. Maybe they will still be there the next time you walk through that way. I know it has been colder this year than in about 24 years I think, throughout most of the United States. This winter has made me want to hibernate. LOL Thanks for your response in this discussion, and have a great day!

Hey, I wouldn't mind picking up a coin on the floor if I see it. Free money. How often do you come across free money in real life? Of course I will pick it up. And I will add it to my "Double Your way to a Million" fund!

Double your way to a Million fund? I haven't ever heard of that. Sounds pretty interesting. Is that a personal fund that you started? Or is that something that I need to be doing a little research on, because maybe I can make more money with what little money I put into an account or something. Please share more information on this with us Ahgong! Thanks for your response in this discussion and have a beautiful day!

I would love to have that kind of money in the bank ahgong. If you had a million dollars just sitting in the bank and receiving 2.5 percent interest a year, that would be $25,000. Along with my online earnings, I could probably live off of just that interest each year. :) Thanks again for your response in this discussion, and have a great day!

Well, it is some personal motivation goal that was running around for a while. The objective of the system is to set up a fund that you can use to double up all the way to a million. The stages are as follows: 01 - $0.01 02 - $0.02 03 - $0.04 04 - $0.08 05 - $0.16 06 - $0.32 07 - $0.64 08 - $1.28 09 - $2.56 10 - $5.00 11 - $10.00 12 - $20.00 13 - $40 14 - $80 15 - $160 16 - $320 17 - $640 18 - $1,250 19 - $2,500 20 - $5,000 21 - $10,000 22 - $20,000 23 - $40,000 24 - $80,000 25 - $160,000 26 - $300,000 27 - $600,000 28 - $1,200,000 The process is pretty simple. All you gotta do is to start with a penny you find. And then keep doubling that penny. I will list the details out in my blog soon. Do check it out!

I often pick up coins I see on the street or any place, as long as they are clean. I wouldn't trouble myself if the coin is some wet and dirty floor. Sometimes, my friends would be surprised when I suddenly stop and pick something from the floor. (^_^") I always think that they would become handy someday.

I can pick up a penny. It doesn't matter if its on heads or tail. Some people say its bad luck to pick up a penny with heads up. I don't know why it is bad luck. When you spend the pennies they go the same way(out of your pocket). Other people are just to lazy to bend over. You better start getting those pennies and saving them.

Yes, I could never figure out how people think that finding money is a bad thing. LOL I figure the more money I can put in my pocket, the better off I am in life. I want to start saving as much as I can right now and try to buy some stock. I think this is the perfect time to buy because it can only go up from here! And they have programs where all you need is $100. I figure that's pretty cheap, even if I can only afford to buy $100 worth in the long run it will go up! Thanks for your response in this discussion, and have a great day!

Now that I'm tall (6 feet) I don't always bend down to pick up pennies lying on the floor in public areas, just cause I don't want to draw unneeded attention. But I have found a lot of coins over the past 10 years, to the tune of about $20. The biggest I found was a quarter, no bills unfortunately. But the Quarters make up for it, i have probably found 3 or 4 dozen.

Wow, K46620. Thanks for sharing your reasoning here. I guess, a lot of people don't think of the disadvantages of being tall. We just think of the advantages. I appreciate the reasoning for your point of view. Most certainly interesting, and something that I would have never thought about. I'm glad you are finding plenty of silver for your bank. It's funny how we don't think about stuff like that until we are explained how someone feels from their point of view. I would have never thought of someone taller feeling awkward by bending over. Just goes to show perception is reality. Thanks for all of your responses in this discussion, and have a beautiful day!

Not only do I pick up money if I find it, but when we go walking or even in the parking lot at walmart, if I find a coke lid, i pick it up. They have codes on them and you can enter them at mycokerewards.com and when you have 24 points you can ask for a coupon for a free 20 oz. coke.

I didn't know you could get a coupon for a free coke with that little of points. My account is getting ready to expire and I have over 100 points. They are just sitting there because I am wondering what to do with them. I don't drink Coke that often, but used to get the caps given to me. I guess I need to go in and cash some of them in so my points don't expire. I was hoping to get enough saved to get a bigger prize. :) Thanks for sharing in this discussion and thanks for the info. I hate pennies, I really do. (Don't ask me how you can hate inanimate objects..Becuase I definitely do). I always have them on-hand, and when I need them, I never have enough (and then end up with more!) Pennies are almost worthless, and you need a bunch of them to have them actually add up. And plus? vending machines, parking meters, and copy machines NEVER accept pennies - so what's the point of them? So, the answer is no. If I see a silver coin - I almost ALWAYS pick it up. I just don't like pennies. ;]

Well, everyone has their right to their own opinion. I am sure that some people get tired of the weight of all of the pennies hanging around in their purse or pockets. At least you do pick up the silver coins and don't just pass them by as well. I know when my sister was in high school some of her friends would just toss pennies aside like they were nothing. We were very poor, although we never let on to anyone. It really hurt her feelings to see these people tossing 20 or 30 pennies at a time when at the time only 35 cents would have bought her lunch for the day. Thanks for both of your responses in this discussion and sharing your opinions. Have a beautiful day!

Yes, we always like to help the kids first. Especially since a penny sometimes means more to them than it does us. I picked up a penny this weekend which I watched as several people just walked on by. I am amazed at the number of people who just don't think much about a penny anymore.

Hi kykidd - Yes, I normally do pick up pennies when I see them on the ground outside. The only time I usually don't pick them up is when they are extremely dirty or wet from the rain. Otherwise, I figure that it is one more cent than I have now and ANYTHING helps... especially these days! Here's to earning lots & lots of money here on myLot & all the pennies we can find! Only if they are heads up. I know one woman who picks them up whether they are heads up or down and she takes them to church for donations...she read a letter once from dear abby called pennies from heaven. It was about pennies lying on the ground and the person donated them.

Sounds like a pretty good letter. I would like to read that. There seems to be a lot of belief in the fact that the pennies that we pick up or find lying on the ground are really pennies from Heaven. If I notice one, and especially if the head side is up, I will pick it up. I have never been someone that would knock others down for a quarter, though I have seen this happen for even less than that. I had the thought the other day that just finding two pennies a day adds up, finding more is a bonus.

Hey UtopianIdealist, thanks for the response in this discussion. I like your views. No sense in hurting someone over a quarter, or a quarter of a million dollars in my opinion. I like your screen name by the way. Very creative! I think that with the economy in the shape that it is in everyone has started counting not only their dollars, but also their cents. And you don't hear much about the termination of the penny anymore. LOL Thanks again, and have an excellent evening!

I normally pick it up if it is within my reach like under my shoes, or in front of my path. But i will not try to pick it out from middle of street, i prefer to let others have a chance for his fortune. For me by doing this small gesture i help to clean up the street for the city with a pay of a penny. LOL!!

Sounds like a great way to help clean up the city. I would do that any day of the week, especially if the coin just happens to be in my pathway. I like the way you describe it with a penny as your pay. That's pretty creative. I myself, when asked what I do to make money on the internet, I say it is just like picking up pennies. If someone is not willing to pick up a penny on the street, then they probably would not be willing to do what I do here online to make a penny here and there.
