Lighting - Where to start?

I am going to start building a photography studio in my house... I want to go ahead and buy my first lighting piece/set and I'm not even sure what to look for. I want to have my first lighting be something that I can use inside and outside also if I have to. Do you have any suggestions of what I need to look for... in general, brand, specific product?

Oh great question! I've been considering setting up a little studio in my house too and like you I really have no clue where to begin when it comes to lighting...Also I have to do it on the cheap because money is tight these days..
