When life takes a left turn

Have you ever had your day all planned out, been really gung ho to get something done and then had life throw a monkey wrench in all your plans? I got up this morning all excited about getting started on a new bead pattern I'd made. I had to order the beads to make it and they'd come in. Discovered my sink drain had come loose and flooded my cabinet. Well, I went to re attach it, because this is a common happening, and when I bumped it up against the basket assembly with my hand so I could tighten it up, the whole basket assembly went flying up in the air. Hmmmph! That called for a trip to the hardware store (1 hour). Another hour of telling myself, "this isn't rocket science and I can get under the sink a lot easier than J ---" (my son) and I have a lot more time than he does. OK, no problem, I got everything put in the side that I'd knocked loose, and decided I might as well see if the other one would come out as easily and replace both at the same time. The gasket had rotted away to nothing, the nut that held it all in place came loose easily and presto I had the other basket out, sink cleaned and new assembly put in. Sounds simple? It was, but it took me another hour. Then an hour to let the silicon set so I didn't dislodge all my hard work. All in all I left the house at 10 this morning to get the supplies, and it's now 3:30 and I'm finished with a job it would have taken a plumber 30 minutes to do. . .but it cost me a heck of a lot less than hiring a plumber! My day's not completely a loss, I've still got time to bead a little.

I think if you just stop posting they eventually cancel it. If you want to turn off notifications so you don't get e mails from mylot, go into preferences and then notifications and uncheck them all. Sorry you're not liking myLot. It's really a nice place to chat once you find your way around.

That sounds like one of my days! Generally speaking I tend to just go with the flow and don't plan ahead too much. But on the days where I do actually plan out the day or decide to do something in advance it always goes wrong! Congratulations on doing the job yourself by the way!

Yep! If I plan anything I usually get side tracked, but this felt more like a body slam! Thanks.

You are amazing. If I had the same situation here, I would have to call a plumber. I have no knowledge of how the plumbing works other than the main shut off valve is in our frontyard and would require a man to get it turned off with a wrench. It's now a day after you posted this response so did everything stay in place and all is working well now under your sink? I know how you feel when you set your day aside to work on a project and it has to wait. Makes for a frustrating time and that burning desire to complete the project. Snags get on my nerves..lol

Everything's in place this morning. It took me two hours and numerous tries to get the drain pipe fastened back on,(couldn't figure out how the washers went) but it was still well seated after I washed dishes this morning, so I think "I done good".

I know you were careful about getting up and down, but I just had to say it. You know how much of a mom I am, even to my own mother.*L* I thought about ripping out my bath tub and replacing it, but I don't know nothin 'bout now plummin, so I am going to have to find someone who does. Don't know what that has to do with left turns, but, ok.*L*

Yes, Dear. I was careful about getting up and down. I don't want to go through all that hip replacement stuff again. Even at that I can get up and down easier than J can. My first thought was I don't even know what to call this thing so I can go to the store and get one. Got on the internet and typed in plumbing supplies kitchen sink drain and lo and behold the first listing was "This Old House". Step by step instructions and the name of all the "stuff" I needed. Now replacing a bathtub's too much heavy lifting, 'specially if it's cast iron. I wouldn't attempt that either.

I know, I know. You can take care of yourself. *L* I did take out all the tile in the kitchen Sunday. Boy were my shoulders, neck and legs telling me about it Monday morning! Now, all I have to do is get something to take the glue off the floor, clean it, then get a stain on it. I won't do that until the plumbing is fixed, though. I could probably change the u pipe under the sink, but that is about it. YOu never cease to amaze me.*S*

Oh no, sorry to hear about the plumbing disaster which struck you... I hate days like this, and I have a very bad habit of making my day worse if it doesn't go to plan by being incredibly moody! I just can't help it!! Yes I know I should be less of a madam when things do not go my way, and this is a trait I am working on improving

You know, just yesterday I was reading how to keep from being completely thrown by unexpected change in your life. It said NOT to stick to a routine. If you do the same thing the same way day after day any little thing seems like a disaster. I used to know that, but now that my children are all grown I'd forgotten it.

Yes that is a good way to go about things. I guess routine kind of 'spoils' us.

Hello my friend thebeaddoodler Ji, It happens many times in everybody's life, and I am no exception. There is a saying, "MAN SUPPOSES, GOD DISPOSE". So all normal scedule set by one, would be surpassed by emergencies. You have to get that sink work right in place befor you had gone for your sceduled work as per plan. Life is like this. So we should always be prepared to deal and stand against such situation. I am sure, even if there would have been another emergency like fire and labour pain in your family, you will leave that and go for next.So enjoy natural living. may god bless you and have a graet time.

my folks didn't fix much of anything, they hired people if they could they were pretty lucky that they actually had few things going bad... I can fix a lot of things, but pipes or electrical stuff I leave to those who know better

LOL I guess I come by it naturally. My Dad used to tell people that if you gave my Mom a pair of pliers, a hammer and a hair pin she could fix anything!

My life took a left turn when I was born, another when I was adopted, another when I got married, another when I had my kids, another when I got divorced, another when I got married again and now you know why I often seem to be going in circles! LOL

Really sorry about the mess u got into. One must remember to take whatever life throws at you in stride. Hurdles will come and these will probably be worked out if you give them enough time. Life is full of suprises and each day at times brings new set of problems. Usually I don't plan things out and just go with the flow if some problem crop up. These problems usually get worked out soon on its own and I feel less stressed out.

In spite of messing up my day, I actually re-gained a lot of the self confidence I've lost since I broke my hip a couple of years ago. Seems that since then everything I started in the way of household or yard repairs and maintenance, I had to have help with. It really felt good to be able to do something for myself!
