You don't lend money to your sister, does that make you bad?

Here's the thing.. I have a friend who's got a sister who has a very big credit card debt (due to too much spending). He's given her money in the past already when she borrowed, in fact not more than once or twice. This time around, I think his sister found out for some reason that he's got some cash (because he just got his last pay from his previous employer) and she's borrowing again. My friend refused to lend her the money because he wanted her to learn her lesson. Does that make him a bad brother?

Not at all unless if his sister needs it for medical emergency. As you've mentioned,he had already given her money in the past. The sister should learn how to spend wisely..not keep on using the credit card then end up borrowing money when the bills come in.

If it's some sort of medical emergency, I'm sure he'd help his sister out in a heartbeat. :)

actually, i am the one who sometimes borrow money from my sister and not just money but her stuffs also like her laptop, backpack, PSP, and even her hats lol she had a more stable and high paying job than me, so she don't even tried in asking me to lend her some money. good thing that my sister is very generous to me, event hough i haven't paid even a single centavos in all that she lend me

You're lucky, then.. :) Not that he's not being generous to his sister, it just so happens that he's also saving up his money. Times are tough nowadays and we don't know for sure what the future brings. :)

Actually I think that makes him a very good brother. If he keeps lending her money, she'll just keep spending. She has to learn the value of money the hard way. Just my opinion :)

No it does not make him a bad brother. It makes him someone who refuses to enable someone's bad habits. I would tell him to not lose sleep over it. I am sure he loves his sister none the less.

I think your friend is being smart. The sister needs to learn to be responsible and get her act together. One cannot just keep giving money to someone who doesn't know how to control their spending. I think that would just be adding to their problems and becoming part of the problem. It makes the other person a co-dependent.

I agree with you. And it's not like he's being selfish, he did lend her some money in the past. But I guess it has reached the point where she needs to be taught a lesson.
