Finally some common sense from congress

A bipartisan group of senators is going to sit down and go over the economic stimulus plan "line by line". There are 12 dems and 5 Republicans so I do not know how bipartisan it will be. But they are going to try to work out a compromise. Republicans have objected to some provisions in the bill that they say have nothing to do with stimulating the economy. "We don't want a package that is too small because that will end up just wasting money. On the other hand, we're very leery of having an enormous package that would not be necessary and would just boost the federal deficit" Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine. So it looks like they at least realize that most of american is not happy about the bill as written. How much pork do you think will get taken out of this bill? How much would make you happy? What do you think this package should cost?

As it turned out, two, count them, two Republicans signed on to this "compromise." And in the end it will cost more than the ginormous bill from House. Bipartisanship is now do what the Democrats want and only the peons get hurt. After listening to some of the debate in the Senate tonight, I am appalled by the lack of care our elected officials show for the American people. Sen. Collins stated that after a "targeted" approach to the bill, the Special Ed. funding was going to boost the economy by saving teaching jobs. Huh? Teachers are the ones getting laid off in droves? That's news to me. If they reach the high estimates of their job creation, it would cost in excess of $200,000, per job. Why not just randomly pick 3 million Americans and give them the salary. Trust me, that'd boost the economy in a heartbeat and we'd know where the money went.

I am not entirely sure as I am not completely familiar with the contents of the bill. I do, however, know full well that the economy needs a boost and fast! Hopefully, they will do the right thing and use the stimulus in the right places.

It might be as bipartisan as they're able to make it because I'm afraid most of the Senate Republicans aren't willing to compromise. Senator Collins has always been a voice of reason along with several other members of her party so I really hope they can come to some kind of agreement because we're in deep doo-doo and can't wait forever! I agree, Congress and the Senate always manage to add things to every bill that has nothing to do with the original intend of the bill and the stimulus package is certainly no exception. I'm glad they're going to go through it line by line and hopefully they'll take those things which will not stimulate the economy or create jobs out. To be honest, I wouldn't even hazard a guess as to how much should be taken out or how much I think the bill should be. These days I have a hard time comprehending anything over a few hundred let along hundreds of billions...lol! Seriously, what I'd like to have happen is for it all to be explained to the American people what each item in this package means, why it's needed to stimulate the economy, how many jobs will be created and any other pertinent details. Both parties use their own talking points to talk up or down various provisions and programs according to their own agenda so I'd like to see then explaining both sides at the same time so we can all make an intelligent and informed decision as to what we like and what we don't like. I know I heard there are over 200,000 bridges in the U.S. that are in need of repair; that is downright SCARY, in my opinion. Most of the Governors and mayors of major cities have gone on record as saying we need to rebuild our infrastructure and while I'm sure some of them are guilty of wasting money themselves let's face it, the economy is suffering everywhere which means less revenue for states, counties and cities as well as the federal government. The one thing that sticks in my throat is the $5.2 billion t ACORN. Instead of pushing for them to get this Obama needs to be pushing the FBI to investigate their part in massive voter fraud. Give the FBI $1 billion to investigate and get prosecuted the people in ACORN - thats a saving of $4.2 billion. Come on Obama - get your head out of the sand.

It'll be interesting to see if this is just for show or if they really will take out the unnecessary stuff like the billions to ACORN. This got from job creating to paying off supporters. Typical Washington pork barrel at its best. Something we really don't need right now. I doubt much will be taken out. They might take out something, add something else, so at the end the majority of them will be happy. At this point they can forget the whole package. They should start over. The package could create jobs at half the cost it's projected at now. Probably more jobs than this one will bring.
