So wonderful to read online that Michigan where the 93 old man froze to death because his elecricity was cut off..was 33 below when they found him1 They will take off the limit bar that is installed on the meters & help in winter so no one gets their bill cut off. They are acting fast and that is great! I was enraged that the man was cut off because he owed 1000$..for heaven's sake he is 93 and surely doesn't have a huge income. They should do like in Canada..here they go by your yearly usage and you can go on a budget plan and pay just a small amount per month..like I am paying just 41$ per month. Now to cut down your bills do this..you will save 1000 plus a year:1. Close all your lights when not needed. 2. Unplug all that you don't use every minute like your microwave, toaster, blender, coffee maker etc. 3. Use nite lights that close in the day time..costs 58$ a year per nite light you keep on all the time 4. Don't use plug in arome dispenser..burn inscence..much cheaper and smells just as great and not harmful to your health. 5. My plugs for my washer and dryer are in between and reachable for me so I unplug them when I'm finished 6. If you have a street light that shines your driveway or entry..keep your outside light closed..besides.. thieves can't know if you are home or not. 7. Buy a automatic timer to open lights and close them at a certain time. 8. Lower your heat at nite If all of you have ideas to save electricity..please add them. When I moved here my bill went down to 25$ a month within 3 months. I was flabbergasted! So I keep doing the above.

You CAN pay on a budget plan here in Michigan too. It's just when you are late with a payment, they take you off the plan. What happened to that man was horrible!

Who could possibly call an elderly man a mooch!? He may have been so forgetful that he didn't pay his bills. My father in law is in his early 80s and dementia is setting in. He may soon reach a point where he could forget things like that. When someone is so elderly, there should be a LOT more sympathy than that! I wonder if those that are critical have ever lived in a freezing climate or have ever had money troubles in their life. Or have ever been widowed and living alone. Some people are heartless!

A few weeks ago I found this fine site about this kind of savings: http://library.thinkquest.org/06aug/00442/homeelectricity.htm They have several good ideas about saving electricity, some of them you told us about, some new. Thanks for your sharing.

That is great, thanks for sharing I will go and check it out..I also forgot to add that I made with four 9x12 tarps that I binded together with plastic tags and covered my back porch and woow does it make a difference of the house being heated. I have found the right degree for me so I don't need to keep playing with the heat dial. Also I wear a sweater and woolen socks and wear my native fur-lined moccasins.

Very good ideas..I keep my bedroom doors closed except the one for my 6 cats lol. VERY IMPORTANT: NEVER EVER DEFROST FOOD ON YOUR COUNTER..PUT IN THE FRIDGE OVER NITE..this will save you from getting a bacteria that will make you sick Also, spray the meat with lime juice..it kills all bacteria.

these are some great tips, I always turn off the lights when not in use, I have automatic night lights, 2 of them, so I dont need to turn on any other lights... and they turn off when it gets light out... we put plastic over our windows, and I block the bottom of my doors where the draft comes in... i will try some more of the other tips as well.

That is great..but I take the nite lights out of the plug because for them to turn back on..electricity must be active so you are still paying for electricity..you have to take them out the socket to really save. You can by a strip specially for the bottom of your doors so you don't have to remove whatever you are blocking them with all the time and putting back. If you have more tips ..keep bringing them in..I put in practice whatever is useful.. Thanks alot.
