Why do people call and then put you on hold?

I work for a rental company and I am pretty busy. One thing that I do not understand is why people will call, ask me a question, ask me to hold and before I answer I am listening to elevator music? Obviously they called me and it was important, so why put me on hold?

That is very rude, I guess they think their time is more important. I'd be tempted to hang up and say they preseed the wrong button lol

I love the way you think. I am very tempted to do just taht some days! Truly, but then I think my boss would be mad if he found out. If I am on hold too long, I do hang up, but I try to hold a bit, but usually I find myself loosing patience.

I love the way you think! That is too great. I am tempted to hang up sometimes and I do if I am on hold for too long or if someone comes into my office needing attention. Thanks.
