Gone too far!!!

How many of you have gone too far in your quest to save money? As in wearing clothes long past the time they should have expired? Or shoes? I'm guilty. I hate shopping, especially for shoes and clothes, and I hate spending money. So I wear 'em till they're good and dead. Like pants that are quite comfortable, so they're a bit thin. They feel better that way. Except if you bend a lot, eventually a seam gives up. Usually at the exact wrong time. Then you have to tape it up to get through the day. I wore out a pair of wonderful, comfortable tennis shoes at exactly the wrong moment. The sole fell off one, and it was in the middle of winter. I had to walk out to my car, no shoe, in snow and ice. Then drive home. How about you? How far have you gone, and gotten bitten because of it?

When I got married again several years ago, we paid for the entire wedding, dinner, etc., ourselves. The hubs needed a suit for the occasion, and we spent quite a lot of our budget on him. Dressed him in new clothes from socks and underwear to the pocket hanky for his suit. When all was said and done, there was very little left over for my own dress. So to save money, I wore a dress that had been given to me the summer before by a friend, used some flowers from the table centerpiece for my hair and bouquet and my 'trousseau' was made up of a pair of high heels and lipstick! LOL

I had all new things for my first wedding, but I have to say, I enjoyed my second one much much more. It really meant more having to really sacrifice for it you know? And it was really quite beautiful in it's small intimate way. I wouldn't have traded it for anything..................

It means more when you do it yourself. Pride comes into play, I think. Nothing wrong with pride in oneself and what one can do.

We did too!! My wedding dress was sewn and created by his mother, from a design I chose. It was the simplest design I could find, but I liked it. I paid for all the bridesmaids dresses, which she sewed as well. I think anyone who does what you and I did are the tops!

As long as they're comfortable, what's wrong with them? What's important is how they feel!

I'm guilty as well. I hate to shop for clothes and some of the clothes on the racks now I wouldn't wear anyway. I have some comfortable clothes that I've repaired and patched and keep on wearing. I don't work out of the home, though, so the bend over oops wouldn't be so much of a problem.

It's so hard to find comfortable clothing, that's one reason I can't give up my older stuff. I really never expected those pants to give, they weren't tight in any way!

First off let me say that I do not believe that wearing 'old' clothes is going too far!!!!!!!! I refuse to let some 'expert' tell me how to dress. How did those 'experts' become Experts???? Who says they are the authority??? Those 'experts' and 'fashion critics' are the ones who have ten year old little girls dressing like hookers!!!!!!! I have had people remark on my clothing, saying it wasn't in fashion, but who cares, I am clean, well pressed and if necessary well mended. Others can throw their money at the 'fashion leaders', I am not going to.

I never buy brand names, unless they're on sale for a quarter at a yard sale. I went too far cause things ripped out, at work!! Even I have to admit that was a bit excessive. My view of fashion is, as long as you can't see the unmentionables and the holes aren't showing anything bad, they work.

I had a pair of shoes I just loved and they didn't make them anymore. I wore them until the holes in the soles (they were thick soled so there were holes to make them lighter) was worn thru the bottem and thru the insoles. I ended up putting cardboard into the inside of the shoe and then a replacement insole and continued to wear the shoes until my mom bought me some new shoes. I loved those shoes!

no idea why they do that fact is, that even the second pair of those shoes weren't as good as the first.

I know!! Why do they always stop making the really comfortable shoes? We have to go to outrageous lengths cause there are no good replacements.

aww, I hate having to throw comfy shoes away! I have resoled a pair of mine twiced and since the shoes only cost me £7, the resoling has cost more than that, bt they were so comfy. i have been saving money by using glycerin as a moisturiser, 1 part glycerin 10 parts water, but at the moment I have no face cream!

We don't have any place that resoles around here. I hate having to give up comfy shoes too. They're so hard to replace!! You gotta try on pair after pair, till you're ready to scream!

we dont have a place either, but you can buy stick on sole and do it yourself.

I tend to wear things as long as I can before I'll give them up. I just hate buying new things sometimes until I feel like I really have no other choice. I hate spending money on things that I feel should of had a longer shelf life than they did. For instance, right now, I've determined that I really do need a new pair of shoes. I really do not want to buy a new pair of shoes, but I really do need a new pair. I'm wondering how long I can go without having to buy a new pair. I'm thinking that I probably shouldn't wait much longer though. They're falling apart in the back where you put your foot and the shoes just aren't keeping out water like they used to. So I'm thinking within the next few weeks I need to buy a new pair of shoes. I'm the crazy type of girl that lives with only one pair of shoes. I don't buy that many pairs of shoes because I live in tennis shoes. I'm not a fan of the other shoe types. So whenever my shoes are about to die, I need to get a new pair soon.

I wear the junkiest old clothes at home and a lot of the time I wear them out on short trips. I went to pick my son up from school and then my daughter had to go to the bathroom. I tried to run so fast so I didnt have to see to many people. I have crossed that line a few times just to save a few dollars.

If people don't like my junky clothes, they can close their eyes. As long as nothing bad is showing, and the clothes are comfortable, I don't care what people think. My problem lies in wearing them out! I never expected those things to tear.

Well, that's true enough too. I know I have to get new shoes a lot earlier than i used to. Otherwise my feet start hurting really bad. It sucks getting older!!

Can't say I have had anything like that ever happen, but I am one to wear out clothes till there is no tomorrow for them. My reasons is because of the kids, they are constantly in need of clothes. They grow out of them so fast! So usually when we have the extra money to spend on clothes it can't be for us because the kids need it more. I remember before I had kids I would buy me a new pair of brand name shoes every month! Then I had kids and haven't had a brand name pair since, had to go to walmart cheappies!! Strange how your money spending change after you have kids.

Very true. I know I got even more tight-fisted after having my daughter. Especially since her skin was so fair we had to get top of the line diapers and soap. Regular stuff wouldn't work, she'd get rashes. So I cut back even more on my stuff to cope with that.

LOL, I was going to tell you about a pair of sneakers that I wore until the sole started to tear away from the shoe and was almost worn through on the bottom, but you win as mine didn't actually fall apart. I have gotten better though at not letting things go too long before I replace them. But like you I really don't enjoy shopping. I find things I like and then just use them until I can't anymore.
