A Friend's Confession...

I've been friend's with "Jenn" for many years now, we're like sisters. We know absolutely everything about each other, or so I thought. Earlier today she dropped a strange bomb on me: she confessed that she has cravings for sponges. Not just like any kind of dish sponge, but a certain kind. AND SHE EATS THEM! She knows she's got anemia and takes iron pills, sometimes. (She says they don't help) She is afraid to tell anyone and was hesitant about telling me. My question is this: can she die from it? or can it hurt her ? she said she only eats clean, new sponges. No, she's not pregnant, I know it's a form of pica, or at least I would imagine it is. Has anyone heard of something like this? What do you say to someone who tells you about this?! I want to help her but I'm so worried she might die. Please share any and all information you have. I've tried to look it up but A) I haven't had much time and B) I'm not finding much. PLEASE HELP! *Thanks in advance!

From what i've seen i don't really think it can hurt her. For more information here's a link i found: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Can_eating_sponge_hurt from what i've read it just passes harmlessly through your body, But i think your friend should make an appointment with a counselor or a therapist, to talk about this. They may actually be able to help her more than anyone else. And the good news is counselors and therapists are 100% confidential.

Thanks so much! I appreciate you leaving a comment and site for me. Does it REALLY mean something is wrong just because she's fulfilling a craving by eating bits of sponges? I wonder what a counselor will say. Geez, I don't know if she will even go to one. She seems pretty normal, down to earth. does it really make her crazy?

Not really, reason why i said that is that when people do that. It generally means they're not getting enough of a certain vitamin in their body. And a counsellor maybe able to help. Or it just may be an odd little habit of hers who knows, but if it isn't harming her i don't really see how she may have a problem like i said she just might not be getting enough of a certain vitamin or something else her body needs. lol Kids who chew on or eat matches are doing so for the sulpher and because they need a certain vitamin added to their diet
