why does in movie or film industry the directors always have the credit for having a great story though there was a writer or author who put his heart on it?

A lot of times it is a team of writers working on a story. And I do see a lot of movies that have, in their trailers, "From the writers of..." and list a previous film that did very well. But it's true without the screenplay the director and producers wouldn't have a movie. Coraline, that is out now, for instance. A lot of people would recognize Neil Gaiman's name if they included it in the trailer but instead they say from the director of Nightmare Before Christmas (which a lot people mistake to be Tim Burton but it was actually Henry Selick; Burton wrote and produced it). Actually, I think more people would know the name Neil Gaiman than would the name Henry Selick (I have seen Nightmare Before Christmas at least 100 times and even I had to look up the name of the director).

I have wondered that myself....without the writer they wouldn't have a thing to work on....and the number one credit should be given to the writer...I know sometimes though they put based on a novel first but very seldom do you see the writer as a first credit!
