How do you download songs to a mp3 player

My daughter has a mp3 player and shes had it for a month. The mp3 is pretty basic bought at Walmart. We have tried over and over to download songs to the mp3 player. We have not been able to do it. I went to a free site and downloads some songs the sight I used was called spiral frog in case you know of them. The songs will download to my computer but they will not download to her mp3 player. What am I doing wrong? Do you think if I purchased the songs it would work?
