Is downloading free music legal?

If the artists licenses it to be downloaded free, then yes, it's legal. Otherwise, it's illegal. Sometimes artists will put songs on their website (or other sites) to be downloaded free just to spread the word about their music, hoping you'll sample it, like it, and buy the album. But most of the time, you have to pay. It's the fair thing to do to support the artists.

Not all FREE websites are legal. The thing with free sites is you have to share your music file with others. You are better off going to yahoo or music match and buying your music from there. That way you know it is perfectly legal.
