Are you prepared?

Well Western Kentucky has been through quite a bit in the last week and a half. First we got pounded by ice storms and then snow, then some rain to melt the ice and then more ice storms....the result tons of tree damage and as the tree limbs broke it brought down power lines. People had to do the best they could with what they had. And in cold weather that is not a lot. Luckily our house is heated by a wood burning stove, we have back up kerosene heaters and have learned in power outages your car (with the help of a thing called an inverter) can power small things like the tv, lights and charge batteries for phones. The only other bad thing that happened during all this is the fact we also lost cell service for close to a week. The only way we knew what was happening in town (or where to go for gas, food, and heating supplies) was using that lovely thing we take for granted: the radio. The National Guard came in with food, supplies and generators to help keep the bigger towns going. Some areas were under curfews because vandalism and theft was occurring. And for the most part everyone pitched in to help each other. I ended up missing two days of work but was able to make up one. Since I work in a nursing home and they never shut down I was able to have a decent paycheck as well as keep a little bit of normacy to my life. But I could not help but think how horrible this was to everyone who has never been through a natural disaster. So are you prepared? Two weeks worth of food, generator, gas, kerosene, etc. And to anyone who has been through this last two weeks, isn't nice life is somewhate getting back to normal? There are several areas still without power.

y'all really did get hit hard. we had some of it here [nw tennessee] but nothing compared to ky. i hope everything is getting back to normal for you. my biggest problem was i had no back-up heat when my power was off, one time for 8 hrs. it had begun to get cold in my house. i hope we don't have any more ice storms. they are the pits.

Yeha things are slowly getting back to normal, there are still trees everywhere, some people still without power (going on 3 weeks now). It's odd how such a short time of storms can cause such a massive amount of cleanup and damage control. I am glad you didn't have to suffer through the bitter cold for too long. And I am very happy now about having the heat source we have for our house now. Because it would have made life much more difficult to go to a shelter and having to check on the house everyday, working, etc. I am planning on making a disaster plan this year for our house. We already are pretty much prepared, but I want/need to make up food kits for my parents who have specific health needs (my mother wound up in the hospital becasue of the food we had to eat). So i am taking this as another life lesson. Thanks for responding and I agree NO MORE WINTER this year please.
