I have been thinking about writing a book. I am 25 a new mother and excited about the idea im just not sure where to start or how to start even. I mean i have always loved writing and my husband is behind me 100% but im just worried and self concious that i wont be able to accomplish what i want to with the book. I have already started and it seems like it could be something really good. But i keep asking myself am i really ready to start this process what happens when i get done with the book where should i go how do i get it edited and then possibly published if its even good enough to go that far. Will readers really want to read what i write? Then there is always the question of what type of book to write about. I have decided that i would do a fantasy/romance. I have always been interested in vampires my whole life practically and so i have decided that it what i would base the book around how ever i wanted my own personal life to be a part of the book too. So this may sound weird but the book basically is about a woman of my age with a baby and husband who so desperatly wants to find out if the vampire world is real. On her 25th birthday she ends up having dreams that lead her to believe that they are real and that she needs to search for this hidden world. So she tells her husband that although she loves him and their son that she needs to find her self so she travels to lands that are in her dreams to search out the "truth" on vampires. to find that they are real. She ends up meeting a vampire (haven't decided on a name)that she falls in love with and wants to become a vampire as well but only to be conflicted with the fact that she is married and in love with her husband and loves her child so much she wants to be with them just as much. What do you think of this idea? Then there is the aspect of names and how to decide what names how to decide what era to put the book in. Do i put it in the time of past or present or even the future. I'm interested in what you guys think. Let me know please honest opinions are extremely welcome.

I've written two books, but I have never finished a piece of fiction. I would love to dive into fiction writing, but I fear it won't be read. My biggest stumbling block has been, like you, where to start. I've found that reading Walter Mosley's book, This Year You Write Your Novel, has had a huge impact on my decision to become a novelist. It's a quick read, and it offers a lot of sound advice and "how-to" do this kind of stuff. The Everything Get Published bok is also on my top ten list of highly recommended books for new writers. If you have a chance to hit your library for these titles, or can afford to buy them, I think you'll really like them.

I couldn't agree more with nancygibson. Looks like she just got it all. I just dropped by to wish you a good luck on your writing endeavors. I always love fiction works and the idea of writing my own thrills me so much. And it really inspires me to find people getting started writing their own book and accepts the challenges along the way. Like you, I'm still in the learning process and i really appreciate finding people who shares my interests. I know that writing a book is a very challenging experience, not to mention the tears and sweat along the way but i also know how it could be rewarding to someone.(I haven't written a book but i could feel the joy of writers who did surpass the obstacles along the way and finished what they have started. Even some aren't published, the joy from having the finished product in your hands from all the hardships you've been through really gives a priceless feeling and self-fulfillment. ) So keep at it. Who knows, maybe you'd turn out to be a great author and maybe i could learn from your experiences as i go along my journey towards the same. (Hey, nothing's impossible right?) I'd like to leave you with this favorite quote of mine. It never fails to inspire me time and time again: "If there's a book you like to read but it hasn't been written yet, then you must write it." -Toni Morisson Once Again, Goodluck to you! Keep writing!

Fiction is always a difficult area to get a first book published in, especially when you choose a very popular subject matter. Please don't let this put you off though. I firmly believe a first book is a training excercise for the author, you will learn so very much writing it, from how to manage your time to how to revise and balance the book once you have the basic plot and content sketched out. There is no right or wrong way to write a novel, some people like to rough out the structure first then go back and start putting the words in, others like to dive right in and develop whole sections as the inspiration comes to them. However you approach it, be aware that you will go back over your work probably hundreds of times making changes before you are happy with it. I strongly recommend self publishing your first book. If you use a print on demand service (look at lulu.com for one well known and widely liked option) you have no financial issues to worry about, as you just set the price and each time a book sells they post it out and give you the difference between actual cost and the cover price that you specify. It also means you can keep making changes to your text if you find an error. Find a trusted friend to proof read for you, and be prepared for them being very critical and this hurting a lot at first. Writers always get very close to their topic and it can be difficult to have someone point out inconsistencies. This is part of the learning curve. Once you have your first book self published, you are then in an excellent position to get a literary agent interested in selling your future novels to a publishing house. This is how I started and it worked very well as I was able to demonstrate that I was capable of not only writing a book, I was awareof what it took to sell it and could prove that there were people buying my work. Also get hold of a book such as 'On Writing Well', most of us have bad habits left over from our school years and its very enlightening to challenge your own ideas about how you structure work. Mostly though, enjoy writing it, it may take you several years to write this first one, but you will learn so much on the way and should enjoy the journey.

A great site to self-publish on is lulu.com it will let you choose what type of binding, paper style and much more. Plus you could make a calendar full of baby pictures on the same site! Hope this helped.

Hi Stardust, how is your writing project on the vampire book? It's been a month since you posted the idea, I guess there must be a few chapters or even halfway through the book. Hope you publish the book soon, make it available in ebook format too. Will you do a condensed version of your book for magazine? I love to read RD's condensed book when I was young, if I liked the story, I would seek out the original book to read.
