Italy

I'd like to know what foreign people associate at first with Italy, what's Italy famous for in other countries.

I think pizza is the most famous and the most eaten Italian food in America, while pasta comes second, isn't it? It seems that pizza was invented in Naples by a cook working for the queen Margherita: he combined tomatoes, basil and mozzarella, three ingredients with the three colours of the Italian flag.

Torre di Pisa - Leaning Tower, Torre di Pisa
Sure! It's a great attractive, unique in the world. Its building began in 1173, and during the construction, when it was less than 2 meters high, the ground sank, leaning the building. Then the project went on, trying to reduce the leaning. Actually, the highest cell, built in 1350, is less leaning than the others.

Did you visit these places? Rome and the Naples area, near the Vesuvius, one of the two most famous Italian volcanos. It's a very interesting area too, for history, geology, tourism (it's on the sea). Thanks!

I wish. I want to go to those places more than anything. I might get to in 2008 through a study abroad program to John Cabot University.

Yes, we have many great buildings, representing all the different artistic periods of the history: the many Cathedrals, from Milan to Orvieto, Sistine Chapel, Trevi fountain, San Marco and the many bridges in Venice, etc. Every city has much to show to tourists :)

Ciao! Your lips are very "Calabresi"! Were you born in Italy or in the USA? Have you maintained some Italian traditions, like the dieta mediterranea, or you eat in fast foods? Grazie!

Colosseo - Roma, Colosseo
Oh yes! Rome the capital, the infinite city, the center of the ancient Roman Empire, the seven hills of Rome. It's one of the most preferred cities of tourists: Coliseum, Pantheon, Circus Maximus and many other ancient buildings attract art lovers, together with the squares and monuments and with Vatican City. Thanks.

It's shaped like a boot and the Pope is there, probably eating pasta.

Yes, Vatican City is inside Italy, but it's a separate state, even if it's in the center of Rome: there are walls all around its perimeter and Swiss guards to defend this State. I think it's the smallest country in the world (only 0.44 square kilometers). Pope eating pasta? Probably, maybe with jam (he's German) :)

This is kind of funny, but also sad because I was told this by someone else and have no clue if it is true. When I think of Italy, the first thing that comes to my mind is hairy women. I was told my another that they don't shave and so are extremely hairy. But I have also heard of how beautiful it is and one day I would love to visit! I am very sorry if I have offended anyone!!

I heard quite the same about Sardinia women (one of the two main isles) but it was an old telling, and I could never check it :) True or not at that time, that is not true now, women shave like everywhere else and I've never known a woman who has to shave often because she's hairy :)
