I love science fiction, I love it even MORE when it becomes science FACT!
so the Transporter in Star Trek is like my dream means of transport, sure, sometimes the travel is part of the joy of the trip, but generally speaking, I'd like to get there ASAP and enjoy being there.
So, when I hear that they are starting to experiment with something that is like the transporter, well, I sit up and take notice.
On the other hand, right now all they are transporting is information, but maybe someday they can dissolve our "bytes" and send them to another location....

That would be cool. No more sitting on a plane for 12-16 hours to visit my parents. I could go and visit people in the States for an afternoon and be home in time to feed my animals. Oh wait. That also means people from America, like my mom, could drop in and se my house is a mess. Not good.

But then they won't get their virgins.
Bad people shouldn't be allowed to use such a machine unless it's to teleport them to a deserted planet where they can all just kill each other and be done with it.

When you read since fiction written 100 years ago, you can see that we have it all today. I believe teleportation is possible, I am not sure how safe it can be....
So if by accident we can be locked in different dimension?....
In the other hand, we can travel 100000 miles faster than speed of light and visit different planets, solar systems....
Dreaming?

"Transporting information"? How is that different from instant messaging?
phasars on stun = tasers used responsibly
phasars set to kill = tasers used irresponsibly

Hi Elic,
That will be brill, but as long as we don't end up like in the movie, The Fly, it should be great.

well, to copy my response to Irishfriendly....
"I'm sure by the time they actually get around to "transporters" a la Star Trek, they will have computers sifisticate enough to know the difference between DNA of different people, much less other creatures and inanimate objects. I'm not sure I'd like to come out of my transporter and find that different parts of my shipmates have been reorgainized into to me - say I'm male and find I lost something important in the exchange - or GAINED something unexpected....
"gee, Scotty, my pants don't fit quite right." "

I always knew those sci fi people knew more than people gave them credit for. I also have thought how good it would be to travel in the blink of the eye. Just think, if it were so we could all get to meet in person all the good friends we have made here in mylot even though they are on the opposite sides of the world.

Wouldn't that be awesome?! To be able to travel to Australia or New Zealand or England and not have to use a plane or ship? I'd try it! (I'm a bit of a coward over the other two means of transport.) (As in, run shrieking the opposite direction screaming, "You'll never take me alive!!")

yep I don't think it will be too long before we are actually living in the world of star trek.
