Do you recycle at work?

Does your workplace recycle at all, whether it's an office, a restaurant, or wherever? I work at a bank, so we have a lot of paper that needs to be sent to the shred department (due to confidentiality), but I recently started a recycle program at work a few months ago where we throw all the non-shred papers (old schedules, memos, calendars, toilet paper rolls, frozen dinner cardboard packages, packing boxes, etc). I feel better knowing we are not throwing away nearly as much as we were. One thing that really bothers me at work is that my co-workers go through disposable cups like crazy! I bring my own plastic cup that I reuse each day, but some co-workers get a new cup each time. I have said something before but I don't want to come off as a nag... How is it at your workplace? Do you have any policies regarding recycling? If not, do you wish you did or have you ever thought about starting a program?

In the reception at the hotel where I work we recycle everything and we are all getting very good at doing it too, nothing to complain about. What caught my eye was all those disposable cups. Apart from the waste, there is also the expense. That must add up to a pretty sum that could be used to buy something else surely by the end of the year? Have they thought of that?

I doubt it but you're absolutely right -- they could be saving hundreds of dollars I am sure.

When I worked in daycare there was no recycling, and it bothered me. The kids used disposable cups at most meals and snacks, the fruit and veggies served were from large cans, which were not recycled. The only thing we did was save paper, like extra copies of the newsletters, for example, for scrap for the children to use. I did save things like paper towel rolls and tissue boxes to use for arts and crafts. But if they had wanted to, they could have really reduced the amount of waste by recycling, using reusable cups and things like that. I also saw some people who would use about half a roll of paper towels to clean a table, which was such a waste. I said something once in a while, all to no avail. Like you, I didn't want to be a pest, but jeez- think about it, is it really necessary to use That much?

I work in an automotive factory and we do have a recycling program. We try to recycle all the usual recyclables...paper, plastic bottles, aluminum cans, etc... as well as searching for items we throw away that could also be recycled in some way. We reduced the amount of refuse that we shipped off to the landfill last year by approximately 80% from the previous year.
