I just found out recently that it's the law of our country that one can't travel out to another country if one's passport is to be expired in six months time. Is there such a law in your country? Am I just dense or is it an international law? If so, why the heck for? Might as well say your passport it valid for 4 1/2 years instead of 5?

I think the 6-month limit is to certain destinations.
To places where you may exceed the 6-month period.
Also, the 6-month restriction will remind you to renew your passport before you do anymore travelling. Otherwise, you may be stranded in some foreign country without a valid passport, that would be more troublesome. No?

Maybe because there had been problems in the past. Imagine a situation where you travel to the UK to further your studies. You go to Strathclyde, a city which is far away from London. A few months after arriving in Strathclyde you have to make arrangements to renew your passport in London. It would be such a hassle, where among other things you have to miss yout classes for at least two days. That is why to have a one year study visa your passport needs to have a validity of at least one year.
The question comes to travelling as a tourist. Anything can happen while you are at your destination. Maybe you get kidnapped for three months. So a six months passport validity will cover the time.
all the best,

Yes, I know that we are from the same country. I checked your profile before accepting your friend request. That was why I mentioned London, where the Malaysian High Commission is located. Strathclyde is far away to the north. The journey to and fro takes around half a day.

It is a rule that if your passport expires soon, that is in 6 months you can't travel on it. It applies to most countries so I always know when my passport will expire and then I apply for another one like about 9 months before it will expire. An adult passport lasts for 10 years in my home county whilst a child passport only lasts for 5 years. In my previous passport I had evidence of a trip to Israel which meant some countries would not have let me in. So I was delighted to get my latest passport in 2005. My son has got a baby photo in his passport because he got it when he was 4 months old. He looks so different know he is 20 months old. I will get a new passport for him when he is 4.

My hopes of going to Disney World in Orlando Florida became dim when I found out about this. But nevertheless, when the time comes to go, I will re make the passport and it's DisneyWorld here I come !!!
