This is a very sad story here. I was staying at a hotel with my family. Well, we left the motel for two days.. Because we did not have the money to pay for those days. Since we left our clothes in the room even if we are not staying there, then we still would be charged for the room. Well, for two days we only owe $80.00 for the room. But, the manager is saying that we owe more than this amount. She says that we owe $200.00. So, we ask for a receipt, she is telling us that she can not give us one. How can we pay a fee for something that we have no proof of? If we really owe that amount, which we know that we don't, then why can't a receipt be shown? Okay, so we come back two days later, and they would not let us in the room. We wanted to get our personal belongings. They would not let us in the room. Well, the only way that we could pay them is if they let us in the room. So, some personal information was in the room that would help us to pay for the room, well then they decided to let us in the room. When we finally went into the room, we noticed that my microwave was gone. And so was their big screen T.V. We approached them about this, and they told us that my mate pawned it. Which he did not. We did not have the key to that room, only the manager and the housekeeper does. We were away from the room for two days, and during those two days we had no way of getting into the room. So, when my mate sees that my microwave was stolen he decides to not pay them any money. And then we were not allowed to get our clothing and anything else private that was in the room. So, my mate when down to the police station to file an incident report about the microwave being stolen. The detective never called him back after this. So, a few weeks went by and after the calling and us going up to the office, we still could not get our things. Well, that is when I got fed up, I called the police so that they could possibly escort us to get our things. And he came with another cop to the motel. Well, I had to stay outside while the police went to talk to the managers. After talking, he came out to tell us that they said we owed them $200.00. And if we don't pay them the money by next week, that they would put our items out on the street. Well, my mate decided already that he was not paying them anything. He wanted the microwave back, because he knew that they had stolen it and taken it out of the room. He said that if he pay them anything it would be $80.00 only. Our things were in the room just for those two days. And a week went by, still there was nothing put out on the edge of the street that week and the week after that. So, now it has been almost a month from that time, and still we cannot get our personal items from the motel. I know that they still have it. They did not put anything to the road. They just told the police that just to scare us and make themselves look good. So, as of this day, the managers are still holding all of our personal items from us. There is clothing, a digital camera, a printer and T.V. And private things of mines that no one has seen. How can someone be so mean? Surely money is not worth this much. How can someone hold anyones personal items from them over $200.00? I want our things back. I have items from Christmas that I got for my kids that were taken out of the room. And the bad thing about it, they would never let us get our things from the room when we asked, and instead they took them out of the room themselves. This is the worst situation that I could ever be in. Even if we begged and cried for our things, the managers still will not give us our things back.

Most hotels reserve the right to change their pricing whenever they want. If you were not staying there you shouldn't have left your belongings there in the first place. I hate to say it but I think you owe them the money because if your belongings were there, they couldn't rent the room to anyone else, therefore, they lost money from it. They should have worked something out with you about the microwave but maybe they actually did not take it and the room was actually robbed. Did they file a police report for the missing TV? the answer to that could explain a lot about the situation. If the police didn't make them return your things to you then it's probably not illegal for them to withold it from you.

Yes, we should never have left our things there.. That is what we regretted.. They did not filed an missing report for their T.V. A couple of days later, they put the T.V. back into the room.. The same one that they took out. The officers that came to the motel, told us that this was a civil matter. They hardly gave us their opinion on what were our rights. They just told us that the managers are saying that we owe them $200.00.. We were in no way, intentionally trying to hold the room up.. We asked to get our things weigh ahead of that time.. They kept our things just so that we could back more money to them. It is a scam.. You can see right through it!

I hope at this time, you already had your things out of that motel. why people are so cruel like that? I am just wondering why the Police can not do anything to help you? If they got some of your things, why they will still let you pay $200? are your things that are lost not worth more than the bills that you suppose to pay? This is just so ridiculous!! where is this happened? South Carolina? I am living in North Carolina. I wish people here are not like that.

Yes, I am not too far fom you. I am in South Carolina. I have been told last week that without a court order they cannot hold our personal items. As far as I know, they are breaking the law. But, the odd thing is law enforcement won't go about to seeing that this matter is cleared up. And the bad thing about this is, the things that they are holding is worth more than $200.00. It really values to at least $2,700. So, if they really wanted $200.00 they could have held the $100.00 Sony digital camera, and the $100.00 Dell printer/fax machine. But, why hold everything from us?? It really is s sad situation. I hope none of our things are thrown away.. We had brand new things there in the motel room.. They don't have a court order.. Law Enforcement should give them a warrant for their arrest. Don't they see that they are breaking the law..???

I think the best thing for you to do is see a lawyer. If this people are breaking the law, they will answer it in court. good luck.

Personally especially since your Microwave was taken from the room, and you filed a Police Report, and the police did not do anything, I would go file a Civil complaint against the Hotel like with the BBB. And if you have too, go talk to a small claims court and see if you have a claim against the Hotel as well. It does sound like in reality they are just trying to Scam you, and who knows by now if any of the thingsou say they have are even still in there. I am wishing you the Best, and it sounds like these guys are definately not ones anyone should ever be dealing with from here, and possibly a place worthy of needing to be Shut down?

If you can't pay the bill they surely won't let you have your things back. But I don't understand why they charge you more without showing a bill. I'm not sure about the microwave, but have you checked the receipt of your previous payments? Is there some kind of price list you can read so that you know if there is anything that can cause extra charges? Did you pay by credit card or checks? Maybe some of the payments bounced or something happened to the card, without you knowing. I mean the police have talked to the manager and they agreed you have to pay the bigger amount, so there might be some facts that you missed here.

They don't charge extra fees. They have never done so when we used to stay there, and when we was late on paying them before check out time. The rooms is $32.00 plus tax. Which is an extra $5.00. Which then makes the total fee of $37.00. We paid every time by cash which was given to us by hand. They never gave us any receipts every time that we paid them. The only thing that she gave to us was a receipt by hand that had the total amount of rent that we paid altogether. We never got a receipt showing us our balance, where we owed them at. We were charged $37.00 a day. Checkout time was at 11 am everday.

hi cream! I am really sorry that you have to experience that and your family. It is really unfair and inconsiderate of them. I wonder why they are doing that and how come the police didn't make an investigation of the missing item. I do hope that this will eventually be resolved and I hope that the owner of that motel will find in her conscience of what she did. Take care and blessings to you my friend! lovelots..faith

Hi cream97, I don't know how things work in your country but it wouln't happen here as if it was us, I just go and break the darn door down and get the stuff out, for without any receipts they have not got a leg to stand on, because receipts are proof of things so the manager is in the wrong and I don't undertand the police either, that is so bad, hope it will work out for you in the end. Hugs. Tamara

Yes, without a receipt, we can say that we paid them and don't owe them a cent! So, they should be very grateful that we are not so trifling! Other people who are liars would do that to you. Well, if they think that they are going to get away with it, they have one thing coming. It may be sunshine where they are at as of now, but sooner or later, there will be rain clouds hanging above their heads! God don't like ugly!

If it's a chain motel, I would go up the chain as high as you possibly can. If you live in the US, file a claim with the BBB.
