School lunches moving towards healthy, or are they?

I am a senior in high school, and I have been one to conserve my money and take my own lunch to school, like fresh fruit and homemade things, but last week I decided to be lazy and eat at school instead. That is the only thing I changed in my diet, taking out my own prepared food for the school lunch served by leaders in the school lunch health movement, and then I got on the scale today... I went from 110 pounds to 115, and that was deducting a pound for clothing, so it really said 116. I think that is absolutely ridiculous, I never have a shift in weight, I have been 110 without a change for a full year, and then I eat school lunch for a week and I am 5-6 pounds heavier! So I think I will go back to my more wholesome foods. I think it is ridiculous that they have been advertising "healthy" eating, though give us food with no healthy benefits. Those foods are full of sugar and fats instead, and have a lack of color, like greens and reds (unless if it is PIZZA!), etc. What do you think of this school lunches? Are they buying bad, cheap products and just calling it healthy? I don't only think this is happening to your children, it is happening to so many of us with products that claim to be healthy, like sugary vitamin water (which they serve at my school as well), etc. Tell me what you think I am going to go exercise when I am done with mylot for the night

Well, mine has as well, and that is a good step, but they have not replaced it with the best stuff either. We still have overly sugary drinks, the only difference is that they are not carbonated. By them banning those things you have a false feeling of comfort. I mean look at what you eat, does it really look that natural and good for you? They may heat up some green beans sometimes, but we still get the basic chicken nugget mystery meat, greasy macaroni and cheese, and other things that may take a few looks to identify...

true. i think there should be more repective dieticians in the world to help out! i mean just because a drink is not carbonated does not mean it is healthy!

I think they try to make it look healthier, but I would think just like eating fast food you can still make your own lunch and eat alot healthier. My husband and I fix out own lunch not only to save money, but to make sure that we are eating healthy. We will eat out every once in a while.

Yeah, my interest is becoming greater, so I was just looking up some articles, and found many saying that school lunches are still more like fast food joints, since they have to feed so many kids in a short amount of time. I have a friend whose mother works in the cafeteria, and she said that everything is just shipped frozen, NOTHING is fresh. It would be nice if these companies worked at a more local base and bought fresh things from the community instead, but they don't want to "waste" the money I suppose. Thanks for your response.

You think you are so special because you are a senior in high school and can make her own lunch. When I was a senior in high school I had to make everyone in the schools lunch. I had to do this walking 5 miles through the snow carrying a chicken on my head. You kids today have it easy. You want healthy? Do some jumping jacks. I'm sick of you kids and your hippie diet food.

and you think you are so special because you survived without health awareness, get over yourself.
