Going Solo One of the most bewildering and preoccupying issues of the 1980s has been the breakdown of love, commitment and marriage. Someone to Love, a film by Henry Jaglom available on video tape, is a refreshingly quirky exploration of why enduring, intimate relationships have become so difficult for Americans. One is never sure where Jaglom's personal life leaves off and his filmmaking begins. A few years ago he made a film, Always, about his own divorce, starring himself and his ex-wife and filmed in his home. In Someone to Love, he plays Danny Sapir, a 40-ish, divorced filmmaker who cannot understand why he, his brother (played by Jaglom's real-life brother, Michael Emil) and virtually all of his adult friends are living their lives alone. To find out, Sapir holds a party for all of his single friends who plan to be alone on Valentine's Day. When they gather, at an elegant old theater that is about to be demolished, Sapir makes a film within a film. One by one, he puts his friends on camera and asks them, "Why are you alone?" The stories are varied: One views her single status as a phase "between great loves"; another has tried husband and family and found it wanting; another doesn't believe in lasting romance.
