Would you support government-mandated recycling?

I once heard, in class, that in Japan, people who don't recycle are FINED by the government. Are there any likewise rules in your area regarding recycling? Do you think recycling should be MANDATORY in all areas of the world? Should there be a law against NOT recycling? Do you think this is too over-the-top, or do you think this could really help save the environment? In my area (Minnesota, U.S.A), recycling isn't mandatory - although if you do recycle, you get $15 taken off of your water & sewage bill for that month. Do you have any similar incentives in your area? Please share! :)

There's no mandated recycling where I live, but sometimes I wish there were. I just don't know where to take a load of glass or plastic containers. The aluminum is easy, but you have to have room to store enough to make it worth your while to go to the recycling center. Our town tried it (I live outside the city limits, so it didn't help me any), but said it cost them more to pick up the separate bags of recyclable goods than it paid, so they dropped it.

Thanks for responding! I live in an inner-city, so they automatically pick up recycling when they pick up garbage - and I didn't even stop to think about those who live in more rural areas. That's totally true.

In my place recycling is not also mandatory..I think it's a good idea to have a mandatory recycling to aware people the importance of preserving our different resources and support a "clean & green earth".

I suggest the government-mandated recycling, beacuse I think only the government have so large organizations in their efforts and financial resources.but in my area(shenyang of china),recyclingis mandatory, but no government,so the effect is not good.company only care about earning money,it is a serious issue that waste of resources, the environment polluted, but much better than before, when not rccycling

Wow, so you actually have mandated recycling where you live? Who or what organization enforces this? Thanks for your response!
