Should public school students have to wear uniforms?

Something I found strange is that my six-year-old sister, who goes to a public elementary school in Minneapolis (a big-ish city in Minnesota), suddenly had a uniform policy at the beginning of the fall 2008 school year. What the heck? While it's not as strict as some private schools, she still must wear a navy skirt or navy slacks with a white polo or white collared sweater. I thought this was pretty ridiculous, considering it's a PUBLIC school. When I was a kid, I absolutely LOVED expressing myself through the goofy clothes I wore. I might not be who I am today (totally domesticated as far as fashion goes), if I hadn't had that time to dress as I pleased (mis-matching and everything!). Do you agree? Do you think having kids wearing uniforms (ESPECIALLY at public schools) is pretty ridiculous? Do you think kids have the right to express themselves through clothing (as long as it's a suitable/appropriate choice)? Or do you think wearing uniforms causes "social equality" and less bullying among students? What's your opinion? Thanks for responding (in advance)!

I went to a Catholic school so I wore a uniform for 12 years. Mine was a kelly green plaid skirt, a white blouse, a green blazer and saddle shoes. I absolutely hated it and couldn't wait until I got out of school so that I could dress any way that I wanted to. The fascination with that lasted about a week and then I wished that a uniform would be required in the workplace so that I wouldn't have to think about what to wear not to mention that it is a lot less expensive! While there was a wide disparity of incomes, particularly when I went to high school, no one was ever aware of it because we all wore the same thing. It seems a bit much to me to have one in public school but there really is a lot to be said for the social equality that it brings.
