As of Thursday, February 5th, 11:30 AM Pacific Time, I am unemployed. Fortunately I saw it coming and I can coast for a year, two if I'm very frugal. Hopefully by then I would have found something other than McDonald's or etc. I started as a temporary January 1995, and was made "permanent" in November the same year. Went from data entry to transaction verification as a temp. When an office opened in California, I jumped at the chance (California being my home state - I was in Florida on a bit of a fluke ...) I moved here April 1997. I got on some projects to improve our software. My task was to track assigned improvements, make test scripts to test the new software, report any discrepancies. That was the most interesting project of all - but it did not last more than a year. Then they got rid of verification, saying that it is more efficient to have accurate processors, being responsible for their own verification. While I agree it is more efficient, I really wonder if it works in the real world. For my accounts, I do everything from the web, and check the results. I am making a note, if I have to talk to someone, get the confirmation code, and double check the statements. In effect, they are leaving it up to the customers. They made me a processor. During that time I was always making Excel and Access applications to make it a little easier. They are using a few today, where values are calculated entering the required information and it automatically pops out the calculation. Most impressive I think is the reallocation calculator - you enter the social security number and account type and push a button, it gets all the accounts under that number and type; you enter the percentages for each fund, including new funds, push another button; a screen shows what exchanges and the amounts need to be performed to make the balances in the designated percentages. That is what I do best. Then I got my last supervisor. I was no longer to have these special projects - my title was processor, and I will process. And then the last phase, to make me totally incompatible - where before I could send phone requests to those who were hired to talk to customers - in the last few months I had to call the customers myself to clarify their instructions, and explain whatever eccentricities of the IRS retirement code or our own plan documents as to why we could not do as requested ... In short, my original job morphed into something I was not qualified for - it took 13 years, (no, I did not have a problem for the first 10 years, approximately, make that the last three years) for me to be the worst ever employee that just had to be let go. There is no discrete way I can put this on my resume, is there? -

I'm so sorry that you lost your job. I know how difficult it can be. My hubby's job was terminated without any notice. He was employed for 9 years and then one day he went in and was told to pack up his stuff and go home...the position he filled was no longer needed. Just keep your head up...it might take a little time but you will find something! Good luck to you in your search!
