Plane rides (like em, hate em)?

I used to be terribly afraid of riding on airplanes, primarily because I watched too much television and I would see so many airplanes crash into mountains and into oceans, etc... I was told that I rode on a airplane at the age of 2, well the unthinkable happened around 4 years ago, I was treated to a birthday vacation/celebration by my brother in law, and guess how we were to get where he lived? Yep, that's right by airplane. My wife kept asking me was I okay, as she knew I didn't like the whole flying idea. The trip was pleasantly over in about 45 minutes and the best part is I lived to talk about it and share this experience with mylot's community. The ride back home after my birthday getaway was about the same, but we hit some turbulence and we were delayed from landing about 15 minutes due to the runway was too crowded. Share your experience with flying the friendly skies...

I enjoy plane rides. But the last plane ride I took was in 2000. That was before all the changes because of 9/11. I'm not scared. What I really enjoyed was riding in a helicopter! For Christmas one year, my dad gave my sister and I a really unique gift. He paid for us to go for a tour of the lights at night on the city in a helicopter. It was great!

9/11 did a toll on all of the world, that's for sure. WoW a tour of the lights at night in a helicopter sounds really cool.

It was. I don't know about your finances or how your wife feels about helicopter rides, but my dad also took my mom on a tour, and she thought it was very romantic. Maybe it would be a good idea for a Christmas present for your wife? You seem to be a romantic husband, but of course if neither of you like small aircrafts, then that wouldn't be a good idea. I think my dad paid 75 dollars for the ride. It was about 30 minutes. It is a present I have never forgotten.

That sounds indeed like a wonderful idea, and not too expensive, but I don't know of any places in Atlanta that would provide that type of service. Thanks for that though, it definitely gives me something else to shoot for.

I have flown thousands of miles - mostly back and forth across the Atlantic. I neither like it or hate it and just like to get there in one piece. The tran-Atlantic lights are in the region of 8 hours flying time. From the USA to the UK we fly at night so after they have fed us I usually try to sleep. We had one flight that had to stop in Philadelphia for repairs to the navigation equipment - that flight arrived in Manchester UK over 4 hours late. We have flown in all degrees of turbulance. I think the only flight I really hated was when we made a trip to Spain - on our return flight when we landed I think they were a bit lopsided and we came down with one heck of a wobble and a bump. Sometime between now and the end of May we will be off again. I am in the UK at present and heading home to the USA. For the last 2 years I have made either one or two round trips across the Atlantic every year and boy have I watched the price of the flights increase out of all proportion.

Oops I noticed a mistake while this was coming up - its not 2 years - it should have been 12 years. I might add that we are hoping to stop all this trans-Atlantic flying as soon as my husband gets his residents visa and can stay in the USA with me permanently.

Airplane fares are taking a toll on the rest of the world as well. Flights that used to be charged around $300, are now $450 and up from the same destination, even if the person is not traveling on a holiday. Ridiculous.

I first rode on a plane when i was 3, we went to disney land :) but now i have rode on a plane so many times that I dont even think about it anymore. I just chew my gum while we take off so my ears pop and after that im perfectly ok. Some times when we hit some big turbulence I get a little uneasy. When we flew from Arizona to Michigan where we live we hit some strong turbulence and we were all a little uneasy then, but we made it home ok. I flew by myself twice when i was 13. I flew out with to california with a friend and his family, but they werent going back to michigan so i was on the plane by myself from Sacramento to Chicago and then from Chicago to Grand Rapids and i was perfectly ok with that. So i personally like flying. its a lot nicer than driving!
