mobile internet compared to computer

I just thought of buying a new cellphone or a laptop. With laptop or desktop computer, we still have to save some budget for the electricity and dsl connection. While with cell phone with internet connection via wireless LAN (WLAN), all we need is a wi-fi zone. But the question is, is mobile internet good? I mean, if we want to do mylotting with cell phone, are we going to be productive to? Let's say a Nokia N95, can we view our friendster or mylot account from its built-in internet browser?

I'd say that I wouldn't be satisfied with the net browsing if I would be using a mobile phone. There's this different sensation when your fingers type on the keyboard than just your thumb pressing several keys multiple times just to compose a message or two.. load time for pages to appear is also something that I don't really find easy with mobile phones.. Well, maybe there are already mobile devices that have made connections more faster but, I'd go back to the convenience of being able to compose messages with a keyboard.. (^_^ )

I don't think they charge if you use your laptop in a WiFi zone? Using one's cellphone to surf the net is a bit inconvenient I should say unless it's an emergency so it's also a good feature to have on the phone.

Yup, if we're down to nothing but only the phone then it's handy, but other than that I'd prefer to use a laptop anytime. Plus, they have UMPCs that are quite small & light nowadays

I guess they will not charge us if we use our unit in wifi zones like coffee shops, etc. That's one thing or advantage having an internet ready and wifi capable phones and you have no laptop, that you can use it in emergency situations...

Hello There! I had used mobile internet on my phone but frankly, I still prefer to use a laptop or desktop computer because it is more functional to use and easy too. With Phones, there are certain sitest that you cannot view since it is not supported as well as you can access other secure sites... or it will have a hard time loading. The only thing that I like on a mobile phone is to check personal emails or company emails as long as you are wirelessly connected to it.. or via 3g etc.. With computers, you can do everything. We can download any files that we need and view them since the computer supports the file. Also, I love widescreen or big screen so I prefer computers when browsing the Internet. Thank you for the discussion. Happy Mylotting. Have a great day! Cheers!

You know, my cell phone has the internet built into it but I never use it! I could be because I don't have a "keyboard" type setup, just the numbers with letters under them. Some numbers have 4 letters under them and that would be suc a pain to try to type anything out. I MAY use it someday, if I'm on the road and need directions or something but, other than that, I would much rather use my laptop on the go. At home, I almost always use my PC because it's larger and easier to type, read, etc. However, I do keep my laptop in the bedroom with me in the off-chance that I want to look something up real quick and feel too lazy to get out of bed and go into my office. But that cell phone internet... it's so hard to read anything at all on that tiny screen!

Oh yes my friend, cell phone can never be compared with computers if we talk about internet, especially surfing/browsing. But I found out that there are some cell phones that have a complete keyboard feature or touch screen.

You will not get the same productiveness in cellphone I believe. I think writing using keys is quite dragging. Unlike with laptop when you can write as fast as you could and get better production. Even if cellphones could give the same services as a laptop, if doing forum sites like mylot, it is better to use laptop.

I thought about using mobile phones for surfing, using the latest wi-fi technology. Imagine being in some areas with free wi-fi zone, I can go to the internet without paying any amount. With laptop, I cannot use it to communicate with family and friends with cellphones alone. Besides, cell phone is more lightly to carry in the pocket, considering I drive my motorcycle. I don't know, I think I am bit confused now...

Good day there neildc. Hmm, Cellphones with WLAN are an option nowadays for internet browsing and gaming. But I think its still hard operating a cellphone for an internet. Its kinda slow and not productive compared to a computer which is fast and has a bigger memory. I do have N82 now but i still prefer to do internet stuff with my desktop computer. It has a keyboard and my phone has a small keypads which are harder to push. =))

I do a lot of mobile browsing and one of it's disadvantages is that the page is fit, so there are a lot of features that you may not see or that you have to go two or three pages before you find what you're looking for in the page that you are viewing. I don't recommend doing mylot via mobile browsing. If you're just going to check your emails or do chatting, mobile browsing will do.

I would think typing on that little keyboard is going to be a problem if you are lucky enough to have a Blackberry and I heard that the mobile internet is more expensive then getting Dsl or cable, especially if you are like me and live in Canada and I do not have a blackberry. And unless you have myopia, that is, nearsighted or the eyes of a twelve year old, I would go with the regular laptop or desk top computer and just use your cellphone to talk, text, or find where you are in this universe.

I have internet on my phone as well as on my computer and from personal experience I can tell you that it is much easier to use the internet from your home computer that it is from your cell phone or PDA. I have an IPhone that has very easy web surfing, but its still so much easier to do from the home computer. I use the internet on my phone mostly for social networking, and email. Things that really dont require a whole lot of typing. But then i type pretty fast so that may be why i find it easier to use a standard keyboard here at home.

I am actually using a Nokia N95 phone and it's good for internet uses because it's fast. However, the disadvantage of this mobile internet is that I can do mylotting. I cannot respond to discussions nor can I start a new discussion. The same is true with Nokia E90, I can't do mylotting too. Better buy a laptop.

So you have N95 and you can search the internet? Then how come you aren't able to do mylotting? Can you view the pages from it, can you read some discussions?

Hi neil, this maybe a bit late but a lot of people say that the internet on a mobile phone is good, and they can get mylot etc, so it would be up to you really-I have a deal with my mobile phone and they supply the internet so I can use my laptop and also free phone calls from my landline for £25 am not quite sure what that would be in dollars but it is a really good deal...littleowl

If you try to do mylotting on cellphone. It will take you a lot of time to post a discussion. The n 95 phone will take a lot of time to type the words. If you have a cellphone with a computer keypad you can do your work fast.I think the speed of dsl connection is faster than the mobile internet.

the upcoming smartphones with windows mobile (tegra chips) combined with opera browser will give you the same laptop internet experience. the iphone is gaining there too. so i think you should buy yourself a pda.

I'd really like to get one of those phones tsk tsk. Problem is it's too expensive and I'm too afraid to bring with me phones like that because I might lose it or get held up. Mobile internet is good because it's convenient definitely. As soon as I have the money...I'll probably buy one but it's something that I can't bring with me...

Hi neil, Don;t understand about using internet on a cellphone but I prefer the laptop or the desk top, I mean you can easily lose you cellphone or drop it by accident, but its just me. Hugs. Tamara

The mobiles will never fill the place of Laptop or computers, how ever may be the cost. The mobiles can be used for the internet access, only in case of urgent or where there is no loptop or computers. Are we able to get the clarity? Do we have all the functions as in computers? Can we work as fast as we are doing in the computers? Will it be a cost effective?(Net access). The answer to the above all is "NO".Accessing myLot in your mobile... Its sure that you are going to loose all the money you earned for about 2122 posts, within 4 or 5 days.
