Hi Everyone, most people have mobile/cell phones these days and don't need to use pay phones. I was stuck in London and my mobile phone ran out of battery so I needed to use a pay phone. I surprised to see the price to make a call has gone up to 40p minimum call. I remember when it used to be 10p to make a phone call. I also noticed that most of the pay phones were not working and I lost my money. I had to search for a pay phone that worked. It was so much effort to call someone, thank god for mobile phones:)

Pay phones can be hard to find these days. I think they expect everyone to have a cell phone. I was out running errands and had forgotten my cell phone (it may have been charging), when I remembered that I had forgotten to inform my husband when to take the cheesecake out of the oven. The store did not have a pay phone, so I drove by another store and gas station but they did not have pay phones. I ended up going home, getting the cheesecake out and returning to finish my errands. It is too bad that pay phones are almost non-existant, since everyone can't afford a cell phone.

That is bad no pay phones in your area! There are a lot of pay phones where I live but the old fashioned red ones are getting replaced but there are some still about in London:)

the last time that i used a pay phone was i think 10 years back. oh my gosh that long. with the advancement of technology the use of mobile phone and all people often use pay phones unless needed like in your case. as observed also payphones are still being used because here in the philippines payphone charge is cheaper than of using the phone for voice calls. so for instance a person is in the mall and need to call somebody he will look for a payphone booth to call the person instead of using his own phone. that will save him much money.

With the popularity of handset I think not many people uses pay phones. But they cannot remove it totally as they are still important to the public in case of emergency like your case here. The reason why they charges more is because they don't get good response from the public and the overhead cost is high as many pay phone has become the target of vandalism.

we cancelled our land line phone a few months back to save money and it is helping because i am saving about $50.00 per month. i use my cell as our main phone now and i have a dsl line for my computer with a splitter which my fax is hooked up to and it doubles as a phone so we still essentially have a land line phone in case of emergency which was my main reservation in getting rid of the land line phone. but it all worked out fine.

Payphone is still popular in the Philippines.
Yah I do still use payphone. It is the simplest and most affordable way to communicate to the person you are trying to call especially if that person has no cellphone and he only have landlines phone.
