There is such a huge difference between flying and traveling by train! Of course it takes longer but I have nothing but time and took the 3 day trip to relax and enjoy the scenery! I couldn't afford the roomette but lucked out and had 2 seats to myself all the way to my destination. I guess it's a good thing that I'm not a very tall or big person because I was able to curl up and sleep at night. The seats are very comfortable and are like recliners so it was easy when I felt like I wanted just a little nap. There were no big lines...or lines at all at the terminals and nobody frisking you before you get on the train. There are no check ins and it couldn't have been easier.
We stopped in Albaquerque, NM and I had the time to shop at the local vendor tables that were set up right where we got off the train for a cigarette. I bought two unbelievable blankets....one for me and one for my daughter. At $6.50 a piece they were a steal. The woman had her loom set up right behind her table and was making them in between sales.
The weather was awesome and I couldn't have enjoyed myself more.
Have you ever traveled by Amtrak anywhere? What were your experiences?

I'm glad you were comfy. Sounds like you had fun. And got a few bargains in the process. I have yet to travel by train. May be an experience to savor one day with my kids. It would be a memory I'd like to share with them.

I'm hoping to be able to do this again with my son (he's 32 years old) and his fiance. He's never done anything like this before and I know he will love it.

I have traveled by Amtrak in California a few times. I liked the comfortable seats, the generous amount of leg room and the stunning scenery I saw from the window. My train was running from San Diego five hours late and it arrived at midnight. Amtrak gave me a free taxi ride for half an hour to Monterey. It cost them $40. My train from Santa Barbara was running very late too and it arrived in Los Angeles at midnight. Luckily there was security outside Union Station and so I felt safe. I got a bus to Santa Monica without any problems. I booked my tickets on the Amtrak web site and got some bargains. When I have been to Australia and New Zealand Los Angeles has been a common stop over so I have been up as far as San Francisco. Amtrak is great and I would happily go on them again.

Since I'm a big fan of Mexican food and there isn't a decent restaurant that serves it back in Boston, my favorite (and my daughters) is the Acapulco. The atmosphere is awesome and the food even better.
