Travel Blunders - Have You Had Any Before?

This article just reminds me of my numerous travel blunders that I have had experienced and this is really one classical one where a blundering travel agent sent holidaymaker who wanted to go to Costa RICA 1,300 miles the wrong way... to Puerto RICO. No joke, it related how this individual Samathana Lazzaris saved up for a holiday halfway round the world, she was careful about choosing the perfect destination but just not careful enough to spot the blunder her travel agent had committed before her flight. Yes, it seems like her travel agent exercised a little less care. Instead of arriving at San Jose airport in Costa Rica, Central America, her plane landed in San Juan on the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico 1,300 miles away. It was only when she got into a taxi at the arrived destination that she realized there had been a mix-up. She said: 'I asked the taxi driver to take me to the hotel I'd booked, but he looked at me in amazement. 'He was speechless then laughed and said, "This is not Costa Rica. It's Puerto Rico". I just wonder how an experienced and reputable travel agent like Thomas Cook could ever have committed this embarrassing error. I could not help but to ponder what had been communicated between her travel agent and her. Also, why was her electronic ticket reflecting the country code of the destination instead of a comprehensive full spell out. It wasn't pleasant after that when she called her erroneous agent and she was slammed with the T&C craps. She did reach her destination but not after 2 days of delay and some extra incidental expenses to rectify and rebook her travel arrangements. Again, out if this I just ponder why the culpable agent had not help to rectify the problem. I have my fair share of these errors but fortunately for me, the situation did not reach that extent and/or my agent making fast one out of it. It just goes to show that it pays to pay attention to details and double checking our plans. How about you? Do you have anything to share here? The poor lady must have been so confused to be told by the taxi driver she was in San Juan and not San Jose. Of course she has flown there without noticing and she was on her way to her accommodation. She wasted time going on to her proper destination, Costa Rica. Do you know the way to Euston please? I asked a person in London. The American told me to go to the student travel agency if I wanted to fly to Houston. Two names can be similar sounding or indeed the same like Newcastle in Australia and Newcastle in England. Washington State is far from Washington DC. I once asked a travel agent the price on a one way ticket to Helsinki. She asked where? I told her it is the capital of Finland. I was in Bulgaria and had language difficulties booking a train ticket to Romania. Even though it was a day journey I had to have a bed not a seat. Coming back I arrived in Bucharest, the capital of Romania late due to a delayed train. The departure to Bulgaria was in a couple of minutes. I got my ticket and off I rushed. Amazingly I reached that train in time.

maximax8, You have brought up some of the memorable experiences with language barriers and I can understand the harrowing occasions. I do agree the uncertainties and feelings as to whether our request is being understood. Fortunately, I have not ever been sent to the wrong destination and I am definitely not looking forward to it. Cheers.
