Is GK very important in life? There are often quizzes in my class - things like who's the present CEO of Microsoft, which motorola mob is made from recycled plastics, what is the name of the algorithm google uses for its search engine...
Is knowing the answers to these really important?

When you need the knowledge, then it becomes important. It is not important to me to know who is the present CEO of Microsoft. In fact, I dont know the answer. If in the event that I need to sell something to him (or is it her), then I jolly well know everything about him.

Thanks for the example. I agree.
Once when Einstein was asked for his phone number, he picked up a phone directory to find his number. When asked why, he replied that there's no point in memorizing things that can be referred to easily.
True, unnecessary knowledge is just a burden.

Dear Cambiste, you are as smart as Sherlock Holmes oh. That's what he said to Watson. When Watson found that Sherlock do not even know that the Earth revolves round the Sun, he was in shock. Sherlock said that it doesn't matter to him, whether to Sun revolves round the Earth or the other way round. This knowledge would not help him in his work.
