Took my daughter to the allergist yesterday and he confirmed what I allready knew she also has an allergy to dust mites. That means all my children are allergic to dust mites.....If anyone else has children with the same allergy then you know what I have to go through. Washing bed linens once a week...in hot water, dusting regularly, and putting stuffed animals in the laundry alllllll the time to kill the dustmites and eeping the bed clear of all things that can collect these darned bugs. Does anyone have any other suggestions that might help clear them out of our house...I know we can never get rid of them entirely but I can sure try!!!!

There's no way to eliminate dust mites from your home. They are an inevitable part of life, and we all have to live with them. They feed on the flakes of skin that we lose all day every day, so wherever we are, they're going to be there, too. Keeping everything as clean as possible helps. Use allergen vacuum cleaner bags and furnace filters to catch all of the particles and mites that you can. There are also special mattress and pillow covers you can buy to help control the populations that amass in these things. Replacing your pillows every few years is also recommended, if you can afford to go that route. You just can't eliminate allergens from your life, so don't get all frustrated trying to do so. I've lived with allergies most of my life, and although they aren't always pleasant, life is still good. Just do your best and take time to enjoy your kids!

The child's bedroom is the most important room to keep free of mites and other allergens. Besides washing her linens regularly, encase the mattress and pillows in plastic covers. Remove draperies, carpeting, and upholstered furniture that collect dust and replace them with versions that can be wiped with a damp cloth, or mopped. (I pulled up some ancient carpet from our house and it is amazing how much dirt and dust are under there! I may never have carpet again.) Keep the clutter in her room down to a bare minimum. You might consider in investing in a good air purifier, too.

oh yes we have done this with most of the other rooms...we removed the carpet in the living room and it was NASTY....it smells sooo much better in this house. But we are planning on moving soon to a newer home and if it has any carpet we will be pulling it up....thanks for the suggestions.

Yes as stated above pillow case/bed covers work well. Also if there are windows in the house that need curtains, make sure to get thin materials. Thin materials hold less mites and are easier to wash if need be. My girlfriend has been getting shots to get rid of her dust mite allergy. Shes been going for almost a year now and there has been a distinct drop in her allergy fits. I would recommend them. They are a pain however. You have to get shots frequently, especially at first. But they may be worth it if the allergy is bad enough. Good luck at getting rid of those little buggers!
