Instant messaging programs

I use three instanting programs: X-fire and Steam for gaming and msn for normal chatting apperantly there are some people out there that dont use instant messaging at all... My digital media teacher at school had never used an instant messaging program and was immediatly hooked after my class persuaded him to try and he was amazed. How many instant messaging program do you use? and for what purposes?
