Who takes them? I do

An article in the February 9 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine reported that multivitamin use did not protect the 161,808 postmenopausal women enrolled in the Women's Health Initiative Study from common forms of cancer, heart attacks, or strokes. And the numbers of deaths during the 8 years of the study were the same in vitamin users as in non-users. Still, it is important to recognize that this was an observational study, not a more meaningful clinical trial. Although these findings apply only to women, other studies have failed to show benefits of multivitamins in older men. http://health.yahoo.com/experts/healthnews/15053/are-you-wasting-money-on-multivitamins/ So do you think we are wasting money? How much do you spend on vitamins?

I spend quite a lot of money on vitamins. I have a multi vitamin pill suitable for vegans and vegetarians. I have an iron pill that is certified to be vegan. When I am pregnant I take folic acid before conception up to week 12. During the whole of pregnancy I take pre-natal vegan suitable vitamin pills. Sometimes I take vitamin B12 pills. Perhaps there is a wider picture like a healthy diet can lead to great health. Vitamin pills give an extra amount of goodness to people.

Wow,I buy multivitamins and use them. I can spend anywhere from $5-15 a month depending on the brand I buy. I had always thought they would be helping me have a longer healthier life. Do I feel that I am wasting money? That is a question I am pondering right now. Do I eat the right foods and get the right amount of the daily suggested amount of them all? Or get the right amount of Iron, zinc and vitamin B and C. I don't think that I do get enough if I don't take the multivitamin so that is why I take it to help balance me out. I can honestly say that I do feel better when I take it and when I don't I can tell the difference because I feel more tired. So for me no I do not feel that it is a waste of money because I know I don't eat right all the time and don't get the recommended daily amount of the foods they recommended to be and stay healthy so I guess that is why multivitamins are so popular.

I will take them when I remember too. That is about once a week. I don't spend a whole bunch of money on vitamins. I have those Centrum Chewables for adults. My kids have some Walgreens brand Chewables, but my son refuses to take them. He hates the taste. I guess I need to get him some regular ones you swallow.

I don't take them very much either. Though I do give them to my kids because as any parent knows kids don't always eat as well as we'd like them to nor the variety of foods. I too am also someone who doesn't always remember to take them or give them out either.

Well, that's interesting. I do spend money on Multivitamins and especially vitamin C supplements. They can get expensive, I suppose.. but I really think I'm going to keep taking them despite the study. I guess I might be wasting a little money, but I just have to assume the body will take what it needs from the vitamins. I dunno, I guess I'm a bit flummoxed at the moment by the study results.

People who take vitamins are often trying to short change other things...fiber, some of those trace elements that are in many fruits and veggies that we just don't know about. i take vitamins just to make sure I get enough vitamin D and calcium, but I eat yogurt/drink milk/eat cheese some days though are not as good as others so I figure a vitamin will not hurt.
