Are You a Pack Rat?

Many of us find it easier to acquire things than to get rid of them. We fiercely hold on to things that are really of no more use to us, but seem to make us feel comfortable and secure. We become attached to "stuff" and convince ourselves it may come in handy someday, or that parting with it will cause us emotional pain. Holding on to unnecessary possessions can sometimes mean holding on to something from our past that would be better forgotten so that we can move on with our life. For some of us this is like a part of us dying and letting go can seem almost impossible. Are you or someone you know like this? Do you think it's healthy to hold on to things that remind us of a different time in our life? Would we be better off living in the present?

YEP! Big time!
I come from a long family line of Pack Rats. It is hereditary, you know. Just plain genetics.
I really can't help myself.
It never fails, that whenever I finally give in and throw something out that I have been saving "just in case", then I NEED it.
So, you see, it really is better to just keep it. Right?

Every so often I go through stuff, or when I am looking for something and I clean out some old stuff that I just have to admit I will never use. But there are some small things, that just have memories attached, that I won't give up. Because it gives me such joy to be reminded just by that little thing sometimes. Ya know?

That is a very correct observation of human nature, especially Africans. At least in Europe and America, there is a culture of disposing off unwanted stuff but here we never do that, so we simply end up getting unreasonable attachment to things rather negatively. I think it is foolish to old onto things for the sake of it. In my country, we have a certain tribe that never sloughter their cattle, animals live until they die of natural casues!

I had a friend back home, she still had the coffee table that had a stereo in it that they bought when they got married 45 years ago, on top of it was 2 tvs that did not work and she had vcrs up the butt, anything she got when it broke she kept it. Her house was piled up with junk, and the garage was the same way. She once told me that when she was small they really had nothing but the bare essentials to get by on, so when she married she just kept adding to the pile, she didn't want to get rid of anything, it was like taking a part of her away. The hurricane fixed that, when it took her home. They are in a new place now and she said it was time to live in the future now instead of the past.
I know how she felt, after the hurricane when we got a place to live, I went and bought the same canasters and the same dishes and the same type of everything, I guess I was trying to hold onto a life that was gone. Now I hate the dishes and the canasters, I want new and to get away from that life we had there, it is gone and need to move on.

I am a huge pack rat. I have so much stuff that I have nowhere to put it. I just have such a hard time parting with things. I do think it is important to hold onto things that remind us of another era in our lives especially if it was good memories.

I think I may be a pack rat as I have trouble parting with things that I have amassed over the years.I cant help but wonder if there will come a time when I will need the item and it an emotional time for me to dicard some items that I have .Granted if I am running out of space or it causing a rat infestation then I will discard the item like I have recently had to do with some of my old notebooks

Somewhat. I keep things that I really love, and I stock up on a lot of stuff. I think that there are other people in this world who are bigger pack rats than I am.

I can only keep stuff for so long then it starts getting on my nerves. In fact I'm in the process of sorting out some stuff right now. Some times it takes a while for me to decide that stuff is getting to be too much. I've seen some of those who are packrat on TV. those have a garage full of stuff. That would drive me crazy. My granddaughter lives with me and sometimes her collecting stuff really gets to me. She collect pop bottles, Superman memorabilia and Tigger stuff. some doesn't bother me but there is a point that enough is enough. I used to collect craft magazines and ideas but usually ended up tossing them because I wan'r doing them. Now I've learned not to collect them because I know I would not do them.

I can be a packrat but eventually I determine when it's time to throw something away. I see no point in wasting something that you can use later. I mean, why make it more difficult or make yourself spend money on something that you can use later if you save things? However, if after awhile I realize that it's not going to be of any use, I will get rid of it in some way.

I live in the present ,and I always try to donate items that
are no longer useful to me ,but they might be usuful to
somebody else. I hate clutter ,so this is a way to prevent
my house from ending up invaded by too many items.
