Don't you hate it when all of a sudden you start getting a sore throat?... Mine just started about 15 minutes ago, it just came on all of a sudden and is getting worse and worse. Now I'm cold so I just turned the heat up in my apartment. I have a bad headache too. I had one earlier this morning but it felt more like an allergy sinus headache so I took 2 benadryl, but now I think it is a sinus headache but not from allergies. I just took two DayQuil. I hope it helps. What do you usually do when you get a bad sore throat? Do you have any tips or things that work for you especially? I don't care if they are old wives tales, certain medication recommendations, or just things that usually work for you. I will try almost anything so hopefully won't get any worse. HURRY... before it is too late! Jill

Wow, after 2 benadryl and 2 Dayquil, honey, you're going to be asleep soon! But yes, I have a sore throat remedy that my grandma always used and taught me and I use it to this day. Gargle as often as you can with warm salt water. Make sure you don't put too much salt in it or it will just irritate your throat. If you can taste the salt, you need less of it. This works. I've suffered from throat prolems for yeeeeeears and believe me, this works. Good luck, Koala. Get some rest.

You are sooooo right novataylor. I usually do not take such similar medications so soon after one another but when I took the DayQuil I'd forgotten that I'd only taken the Benadryl an hour or so ago. :( Good night! No really, I am very tired so I am going to go lie down after a few more responses. I better set my alarm clock so I wake up in time for when my son gets home from school. I will try the gargle thing with warm salt water if my throat gets any worse. However, I better do it in the bathtub or outside because I'm not very good at it and it ends up all over the place! Or, I could just covered the carpet & myself with a plastic tarp and then try it! Thx again for your well wishes & advice.

LOL honey, boy, can I relate to THAT! I make a mess of it but I go on and do it anyway. It truly does soothe the throat. So night night, darlin, and do be sure to set that alarm. Sweet dreams..........

Oddly enough the exact same thing happened to me yesterday, I was fine and in a few minutes I could hardly swallow and started with the achy feeling and headache...funny part is we live half way around the World from each other of I would have though YOU Gave Me something! :D Anyway, for a sore throat I gargle with the hottest salt water I can stand or maybe put an aspirin in a hot glass of water and gargle, There are always sore throat lozenges and some of them help for a little while and use to when I lived in the States there was this green liquid called Chloraseptic which you could buy at the pharmacy. It was a liquid in a spray bottle and it actually numbed the pain and that Always worked for me. Hope it helps and hope you feel better! ;)

Hi, I am very sorry that you are not feeling very well. What I usually do will suck on halls or any sore throat lozenges. I will gaggle my throat out with warm salty water to ease the sore throat pain. I will also spray Cholraseptic spray down my throat. I will go to the doctor to see if it is an strept throat.. And if not they will give me some antibiotics to take. And you ncould also try Theraflu Warming Effects for sore throat.. I hope this will help you.. I myself hate having any kind of sore throat pain.. And this makes me feel very bad to go through this.. I had a sore throat a month ago, and it was not pretty. It lasted fot almost 2 weeks... I hated being as sick as this! I really do hope that you will start feeling better very soon..

Hope you are feeling better. When I first feel like I am getting a sore throat, I start taking Echinacea. This will help boost the immune system and possibly ward off an oncoming cols, if you start taking it early enough. If the sore throat is evident and hard to swallow, i will boil water and add to a 12oz cup with at least a 1/4 cup (or less to taste) of lemon juice, Several tablespoons of honey (sweeten to taste) and a pinch of cayenne (not too much). This is so soothing for a sore throat. Lozenges can be soothing also. Fisherman friends work great! Try to avoid mucus forming foods such as cheese, milk etc. Usually a sore throat turns into a full blown cold. Be careful that the "cold" doesn't get into your lungs and become a bacterial infection. In that case you will need to see your doctor for antibiotics. Just get lots of rest. Key factor and drink plenty of water. Hope that you are all better soon.

I am sorry that you aren't feeling well. I laughed when I read your post because we are so very opposite in how we deal with these things. I almost never ever ever take any sort of meds. I'm not saying they don't help....I just don't even consider them...as a rule. I get a sore throat and I just ride it out...maybe cough drops. I do have allergies and if they get severe, I may take a benedryl but that has only happened like once or twice. I swear that if you push yourself to get in the shower and do your normal routine that most illnesses will just go away....they do for me. Maybe I just have a good immune system. I just don't get sick and stay sick hardly ever. A couple of years ago, i did get sick and I just kind of knew that it was something that i needed help with...I was right...I had bronchitis. It would not have gotten better by my methods for sure. My 15 yr old will now tell me that I 'm right. She never feels good when she wakes up. I don't either...I hate mornings. She gets up and has some cereal and jumps in the shower. She says that almost always she is feeling healthy and ready to start her day by then.

Yes I hate it. I gargle with warm salt water. Then have a hot cup of tea. Sometimes that does the trick.

I get sore throats quite often. I hate them and nothing usually works to help get rid of them. Lately I've been increasing my Vitamin C intake. Not by pill form, but by eating oranges. Also, I am drinking tons more OJ. I havent had a sore throat for awhile, which to me is like a month! I want my tonsils out, but I won't be able to do that for another 5-6 months as I have to much going on to get the procedure.

Goodness 22angel22 - you do get sore throats quite often! That must be horrible. My throat is feeling much better today but I couldn't even stand just one day of it. I hope when you finally are able to get your tonsils out that it keeps you from getting those sore throats so often. I just took the DayQuil twice yesterday and also a multi-vitamin... seems to have done the trick so far. Hopefully it won't come back again. Thanks again for the advice. Take care. Jill

Ohh yeah... I have tried using H2Ocean sea salt spray. You can get it at alot of tattoo/piercing parlors. I know it sounds odd, but it is something nice to keep around because it does help with alot of things other than heal a tattoo/piercing. Even Pink Eye!

Ok first thing I do if I feel I am getting sick is to take 2000 mils of Rose hips Vitamine C every 2 hours for a day. It usually gets it gone. If it doesn't them I like to keep it up and sip honey and lemon. Then if that doesn't work throat lasenges. It sounds like you are either getting "The Cold" I had it 2 times since Dec. It also might be the flu. If you get a feaver and rum a temp it probably is the flu especially with the ache feeling all over. Yuk, I hate it. I do not get sick very often but when I do it's not a good thing. Good luck

Sore throat, I just hate this problem. This had kept me in serious problem once. I had to perform a song that day, and I got sore throat in the morning. The hell was happening to me that day. I had to practice a little in the morning time to prepare for the evenings performance. The more I practiced, the more it got worst. I drank lots lots of water. Took some herbal medicines, but it was getting worst even worst with time. I gargled with salt water too. Then finally took some strepcils too, but it didn't help me. Finally at the time of performance, I was voiceless. I couldn't even speak. So, I missed to perform that day after a weeks practice. And I even frustated my guitarists and drummer who were very much ready to perform. I was getting headache too, just got tooooooooo much frustated that time. It took me about a week to get cured. This is the worst sorethroat I have ever get. But last time it was not that bad, I drank lot of water, took some strepsils. Drinking water and resting the water at my throat gave me much comfort. However with time, sore throat problem goes away. You have to be patient. Happy mylotting...

Hi Jill. My sore throat started yesterday morning and now it's almost gone. As soon as I felt like I was getting sick yesterday when I woke up, I took paracetamol straight away and for the sore throat I put warm water in my mug and put a tablespoon of salt and stir it until it is dissolved. I used this to gargle every hour, as in every hour Jill. The salt in the warm water kills the bacteria that builds up in the throat and ease the soreness I was feeling in there. Now I am better, much better. Hope you are feeling better now too after several hours.

When I have a sore throat,I will have a medicine as soon as possibile. The sore throst usually shows that you catch a cold. And then, you must care about your body health. If I have a headache or a coach, the first step is to take the medicine. And this is the basic. In addition,I will run on the playground until I sweat. And I find it is very effective. The third is that we should take more exercises to keep our health.

Hi vanities - I am not very good at gargling... it seems to go all over the place. lol! I usually like to have really cold things to drink when my throat hurts. It helps numb the pain when it is sore like that. My husband always tries to convince me that hot liquids are better, like hot tea. I just never want anything warm or especially hot when my throat hurts.

The first thing I do when my throat becomes sore, is I use Cloreseptic thin strips. These are flavored strips that disolve in you mouth and help bring immediate relief. Then I make a big pitcher of lemoneade (real lemons not the powered junk) and sweeten it with honey. You can drink this hot or cold, your choice. This soothes my throat, keeps me from becoming dehydrated, and gives you a Vitamin C boost. I also take 800 IU of Vitamin E, 10,000 IU of Vitamin A, and 800 IU of Vitamin D - twice a day for 2 - 3 days. E is an antibacterial, A is an antiviral, and D lets your body use Vitamin A properly and supports the immune system. If you have any B6 and B12 on hand, they are also good when you are ill (immune system support) or simply increase your protein intake for a day or two - That is why chicken soup is so good for you (it is full of A, C, E, and B vitamins). If you are no better within 2 - 3 days - go see a doctor because it could be serious (Strep, pnuemonia, etc). For the sinus headache, two things. First, use a pain reliever of your choice, aspirin, tylenol, motrin, etc. Then, rinse out your sinuses with saline water. There are a lot of ways to do this but I personally use a product called "simply saline". This cleans out any dust, pollen, bacteria, etc. that is in there causing the problem. (If you do have allergies, this is great for keeping them under control - just rinse once a day during allergy season.) Hope you are feeling better soon.

Glad to hear you are feeling better. I have problems with a lot of "cold medicines" so I have had to learn about alternatives. Since I can't afford to miss work; I have had to find ones that really do work and work fast. If I take any "non-drowsy" or "daytime" medicine; even a single dose, I won't be able to get any sleep for at least 48 hrs; and being sick, tired, and unable to sleep makes me even more miserable. So, while I am glad that the Dayquil worked for you; I have to rely on Nyquil if I give in and actually take any "medicine".

thank you speakeasy for all of your great advice. I am feeling much better today so far and no sign of a sore throat besides just a little dry throat, but that might be from the DayQuil I took yesterday. If it comes back I will surely keep all your great information just in case I need it later on. Take care & thanks again. :)

When my throat starts to hurt like that I usually am starting to get strep throat. I don't find anything works except to stay in bed. Usually, I am really sick for 2 weeks with it,even with antibiotics. I hope that yours is just a cold. Drink some orange juice and sleep- maybe it will help.

Grab yourself some echinacea and zinc as soon as possible!!! Echinacea helps boost your immune system and zinc will cut the length of your symptoms in half but ONLY if you start it right away! Sorry I didn't see this yesterday, but it's still not too late! Echinacea and zinc. There's something out (over the counter) that has both of those plus Vitamin C. I have some on hand each winter. As a matter of fact, I just started taking some yesterday because I got a sore throat then, too. Today, I've sneezed a few times, but don't feel particularly bad. (Knock on wood!) Good luck to you! Hope you're feeling better real soon!

Oh, I forgot... gargle with warm salt water. Put a teaspoon of table salt in a small cup of warm water and gargle, spit, gargle, spit, until it's gone. Salt is a natural antibiotic and also makes your throat feel MUCH better immediately! Gargle as often as you can (at least 4 times a day).

Gargle warm, salt water. Put a wash cloth under very hot water and then place it around your neck. Also, take some tylenol to ease the pain even more. Sometimes people get that chloraseptic spray, which numbs your throat for awhile. Hopefully these tips will help you on the road to getting better. Good luck!

I really do need to buy some of that chloraseptic spray. I don't have any at home. Luckily though, it doesn't seem like I'm going to need it this time as my throat is much better today and all I took was the DayQuil yesterday once in the afternoon & again right before bedtime. Thank goodness. Thanks again abradshaw6001!
